Timeless: Eagle Capture
Drawing from October of last year.
-
A younger Vygo, in his early 20s, attempts to capture an eagle fledgling straight from its nest. His twin sister, Indrys, is atop the cliff, holding the ropes that keep him safe, as well as giving him support, just as he will do for her when it's her turn to catch her own raptor.
To capture his or her first eaglet is rite of passage into becoming a hunter for Turvao Varanar tribes. Wild eaglets are captured from their nests, and taken into training. Females are preferred, as they are bigger and stronger than males. A hunter will keep his or her eagle for close to a decade, and after that, the animal is released back into the wild so it can continue its natural lifecycle.
It's not easy to catch an eaglet. Adults are very protective of their young, and nest in tall, steep cliffs. It's a dangerous task to reach them, and one wrong step can result in a lethal fall, or in the best-case scenario, a life-crippling injury.

I love seeing the twins when they were younger! :D
This sort of thing would be so nerve-wracking, especially for.. INDRYS! Since she has to just WATCH, right now, worrying about her brother, willing him to NOT falllll D:
Hunting with eagles is so very worth it, of course. Perhaps even a necessity, out there on the steppe.

Something I love about those hunters with eagles (or at least those from Mongolia I read about), is that they never really domesticate their eagles. True, they pick them up as young ones from the wild, but then later release them again, like you described, without any breeding attempts either- even leaving them a whole dead sheep as goodbye gift for food. And so the eagle stays wild in the core, and the bird also knows how to hunt alone because they've been hunting all the time anyway.
It's just a beautiful thing, in my opinion. I wish people did that more often with their animal assistants, instead of turning healthy wolves into suffering pugs eventually. You must respect the animal just the way they were meant to be.
