Kinah is one of the many children of Maua, the mighty matriarch of the Udevu Mob. Being one of the oldest of her mother's daughters, Kinah is a very valued member of the mob as an experience pupsitter. But Kinah wasn't completely satisfied with looking after the mob's youngest and dreamed of someday becoming a matriarch herself. So one day, Kinah challenges her mother Maua to a mashindano, hoping to claim the coveted title of dominant female for herself. Kinah ends up being no match for her fierce mother and loses the battle, and is forced to leave the Udevu as a result.
However, Kinah doesn't end up leaving alone as her older sister Moza and two other subordinates choose to go with her, not wanting her to be by herself. The four females are eventually joined by two roving males from the Leza and another from the Mdogo, naming their new mob the Sarki. Despite not being the oldest, Kinah establishes herself as the group's matriarch and takes the oldest male Jed as her mate. Kinah quickly became pregnant with a litter of pups and the Sarki showed promise of being a successful mob.
But not everythng can go as planned.
While still pregnant with her litter, Jed suddenly dies from an illness. The illness that took his life turned out to be what meerkats referred to as the Mob Killer, a disease that had the potential to wipe out entire mobs. Sure enough, the other three males soon start to show symptoms of the disease, which prompted Moza, Kinah and Delu to ditch before they caught it themselves. Things begin to look up when Kinah gives birth to her litter, but the pups are soon lost when a hungry monitor lizard finds the burrow. Her once promising mob was now down to just three females.
Still hoping to find a way to rebuild their mob, Kinah leads the remaining Sarki members near the Komandoo's territory one day in the hopes of attracting some roving males who would be willing to join them. This plan ends in disaster with the Komandoo Mob catching and killing young Delu, leaving Moza and Kinah as the only remaining members of the Sarki. Once the two sisters get back to the burrow, Kinah breaks down and blames herself for all that had happened. If she had just been a better leader, then maybe none of their other mob members would have died. Moza tries her best to console her guilt ridden sister and tells her that they might still have a chance to rebuild, but Kinah is inconsolable.
The two sisters eventually settle down in the burrow for a long, cold night together. But whether it was from cold, hunger, a broken heart or some combination of the three, Kinah looses her grip on life and never wakes up again.
Kinah is based off of Kinkaju, one of Flower's many children as well as the first and only dominant female of the ill-fated Starsky Mob. Her story is not a very happy one as you can see.
And yes, the Mob Killer is meant to be TB. I like to think that TLK meerkats have their own name for that disease.
