Kai'en is an Ala Mhigan refugee, raised by Lalafellen monks until she was around five or six; when they were all slain by Theodric when he razed the Temple of the Fist.
She managed to escape the temple and make it to the border of the Black Shroud where she continued to Ul'dah, taking little jobs she could do and any help that was offered to survive.
She's a tough gal, we love her.
