The discussions with Rich got me to think of what is needed in a good utility aircraft design them being load hauling, short field performance and easily flown by low time pilots like myself.
So it will have 35 foot wingspan but because it is short coupled it needed a big rudder and vertical fin. My solution twin rudders and vertical fins at the edge of the wide fuselage. I oversized them by 5 square feet to make sure you have positive rudder authority in case of a spin. I'll let this set for a bit to see if I still like it...

It's an option, but would require a bit of house rewiring as there's no easy way to put the inverter between the mains and the rest of the house (I could use the inverter to charge the batteries, but not while the inverter is feeding power to the house. So one breaker for charging and another for power - with lots of warning labels on what to flip off/on in which order!)
