"No," Jackie refused, almost in a bark-like sound, "we are not filling the greenhouse with starfruit, I mean, you pay for it, and then it takes a whole season to grow. If we plant ancient fruit instead, then we'll get to harvest it every seven days."
"But then we'll need to be wasting most of our early crop on making seeds," I reasoned, "it's much better to -"
The loud thumping of someone going down the stairs interrupted my argument, and I turned to see a golden retriever girl walk into the room. Ashley hadn't shown her face all day - and I saw why. She'd finished changing. The final change, her tail was hanging behind her.
Unlike during my change, where I'd just tossed hygiene out the window, Ashley had kept herself looking presentable throughout all of it. She had her brown hair held back with a hairband, sitting behind her now floppy dog ears.
"Hey Ashley," Jackie smiled, turning her attention away from the game.
"Hey," Ashley whispered.
"What's up?" I asked.
"Nothing," she said, "I... I just wanted to see what you were doing."
Ashley sat down on the couch, timidly pulling her tail out of the way. She watched us quietly as we chatted about making a trip to the mines. Getting iridium was such a pain. I kept insisting that we needed to look up a walkthrough, but Jackie wasn’t -
"Why are you both so happy?" Ashley asked out of the blue.
We glanced to her. "I dunno," I shrugged. "I got used to it - accepted it."
"I can't see how you can do that," Ashley continued to speak quietly, "I just feel... so cold. So alone."
"You're not alone," I hugged her, feeling a bit weird as I felt her new fur coat there.
"I feel like I'm in a dream," she said. "Like I'll wake up. But instead it just has gotten worse... and now it's finally ended. Now I'm looking in the mirror and seeing... seeing this..."
I started to see tears in her fur.
"It's difficult," I said, "but you don't look like a freak to me. You may have fur now, but to me I can still tell it's you in there, my sister Ashley."
She was quiet. She didn't respond, and I returned to our game.
"Seeing it happen to Mom and Dad is freaking me out," Ashley said.
"I... I will admit that has been difficult."
"It's difficult for all of us," Jackie said, "watching this just... wreck everything."
Although Jackie had admitted to me that she actually liked what had happened to her, she didn't like watching it happen to people who hadn't asked for it. Like her Mom. Or Douglas's family. They'd almost finished changing too, and it was extremely strange going to his house now and seeing a family of huskies there.
Seeing the response to all of this had been so... strange. Jackie had related to me that several furry communities she was in online had gone rabid, so to speak, with a desire to intentionally contract the virus. It had scared Jackie - not that they wanted this, but that they seemed to have no idea of the real implications of this.
The quarantine would soon be ending for us. We'd go back to school in the next few days. I wasn't very excited, but I had the assurance at least, that many people who would be too depressed with their own transformations to bully me for mine.
"I keep," Ashley sobbed, "finally getting my mind off things. I think of something unrelated to all of this - like how cool it'd be to go on vacation somewhere, only to remember that I would go to the beach, and get in the water... as a dog."
I couldn't say that I was very enthusiastic about that either. Showering wasn't too bad... but sometimes it really felt like such a chore. Swimming seemed like it'd be really strange to me - if any of the public pools around here would even allow us to swim in them.
"And then I think of the future," Ashley said, lowering her voice even further, to a hoarse whisper. "I... I don't know if I want it. If I can live with that..."
I stopped moving in the game.
"Ashley," I said in a calm, but firm tone. "Are you having any unhealthy thoughts?"
No response.
"Ashley," I asked more directly, "have you had any suicidal thoughts?"
No response.
I breathed deep. I hadn't had to deal with this kind of sensitive situation before. And I hadn't thought of my energetic, nothing but sports on the brain sister, as being so depressed.
"They will all reject me," she said. "I'll never have friends again. Never have a boyfriend. A career -"
"Ashley," I said, "I have felt that. I know how you feel. There is nothing wrong with you for feeling that hopelessness. But I can get through it. I know that you can too."
"I can't," she said fatalistically. "I won't. I don't want to."
"Please Ashley," I said, "just stay calm. Think carefully. Our quarantine is ending in a few days. Just focus on that."
“I… I am focusing on it," she wept, "that's the reason I feel so horrible! I’m going to have to eventually leave home. None of my friends know that this has happened to me, and they're going to all abandon me!"
"Just," I hugged her, "Just stay calm. You don't know that. If you do have friends that abandon you -"
"I don't want to lose my friends though," she cried, "I ahhheeeeee..."
She trailed off into a wheeze. It had the slight sound of a whimpering dog behind it.
"You'll always have me, Mom and Dad," I said. "We love you. And there are good people in the world who will accept you."
Ashley got up, and walked back upstairs. As soon as Dad got home from his new lab, I was going to have to talk to him about Ashley.
No.
Urgency took me over, and I decided to call Dad instead. The phone rang. And rang. And rang. I almost hung up, when Dad finally came on the line.
“Hey Matt.”
"Hey Dad, I need to talk to you about something."
“I’m sorry Matt, I’m really busy at the moment.”
"Dad this is important, Ashley is really depressed to a very concerning degree."
I heard a sigh of exasperation. "Okay. I'll talk to her when I can - which isn't right now. You'll need to talk to Mom about it."
"Well you know how Mom can get… I don’t want her to give Ashley more anxiety - is something going on Dad?"
".... Matt, we did not have this conversation. Delete the information about it off of your phone. I also need you to do something else for me."
"Um... okay."
"That Switch from the lab, in the carrying case there is an SD card in one of the game card slots. Take that out, and hide it somewhere - somewhere very well. And as far as you're concerned, there was no other lab."
"... Dad?"
"Yes?"
“Can you please tell me what’s going on?”
"..... I'll be home tonight Matt. Don't worry, it will all be alright."
I glanced over at Jackie as my Dad abruptly hung up. She was concentrating on the game. She didn't seem to realize that something very concerning was going on.
And really, I didn't know much of what was going on either.

If the father is nervous about people listening then I doubt he would mention the SD card or the lab over the phone. Since almost all calls are recorded and tracked these days. Personally I try to make it sound like a normal conversation like he says to Matt "That Switch is very old. It's not really safe. Best to get rid of it or put it away." I think most people could figure out that something funny was going on and Matt would likely hide it just in case it was important (at least I would). But then again it may not be that obvious to some people.
