I made this knife over the weekend from a section of the inner race of a palm sized bearing.
Bearing steel is usually made from 52100 steel which is high carbon and has a lot of chromium in it. This steel is a bit harder to forge than most other steels.
The blade was given a roughly ground bevel and was heated to a bright red colour. I was able to take two pieces of wood and then slip the hot blade between the two and press them together in order to burn in a recess that accepts the blade and holds it.
The two pieces were super glued together and then carved down into a very thin case that would soon be inserted into the leather work with the blade.
The ferrule is made from a section brass pipe and hammered over a bickern to flare out one end.
The tang was heated and burned into a piece of hickory that would become the handle.
The ferrule was also burnt onto the handle before full assembly.
It's quite nice to be able to use fire as a way to quickly remove wood by turning it into a gas and residual charcoal powder.
The sheath was made today.
