~6.5" x 6.5". ink.
I found myself today with nothing on me but my brush pens for doodling. So I
drew this :) And I also realized that I'd skipped the facial expression process stage
for Warren, which I'll go back and do because it is useful and important to cover.
That's when I do much of my thinking about the character. As in this case: I
imagine that the rest don't let Warren drive the van, because not only is he
completely color blind, he has weird hallucination/synesthesia stuff going on.
This is also why it's good to switch your tools from time to time, because even
though I've been trying for a crisp/rough graphic look for the BREMEN stuff, i do
tend to think differently when I draw with a line. And so drawing this
image reminded me of this and inspired the idea that he probably perceives
differently as well.
I can image sequences of images from his point of view that are excuses for loopy
black and white line work, perhaps typically Al Hirschfeld during clear, zen, lucid
moments, but shifting to splattery Ralph Steadman style visuals when agitated.
And I'm thinking that color will play a role in these things but it's in response to his
other senses: so music and scent will read as colors for the viewer - that is to say,
he still hears and smells, but this will enter his world visually as colors for the
reader's point of view. I hope that makes sense. I understand what I mean :P
Anyway, it's an excuse to change visual styles and to introduce fantastic/weird
imagery into a setting that could otherwise feel too grounded in naturalism (see:
the animated visuals to Pink Floyd's The Wall and how they interrupt and
frame the live action scenes).
Also, I'm thinking about each character bringing a different musical sensibility to
things, with this guy being the not just the "Yellow Submarine" type of
psychedelia, but also, the goofier Frank Zappa stuff, the "Hampster Dance",
"Flying Purple People Eater", "Sleepyhead", DEVO, "Little Fluffy Clouds", KLF, 3 Feet
High and Rising, GWAR, Tiny Tim, "911 Is A Joke", Parappa, and other off-beat, quirky,
or "gimmick" performers, bands and songs that are still notably compelling.

no, not a druggie, i don't need to include that into the narrative. it's bad enough that Gerik smokes, but just very nutty.
i'm thinking of my own dog Buddy, growing up, who fell onto his head as a puppy - i don't know if the drop actually affected
him all that much, but he was always a little slow and dim, but very very happy. the kind to sit on his dog house when it rained,
rather than in it. may or may not have been off his nut.
the real people i've known that composite to Warren probably were using drugs, but i don't know that for sure. i would like to think
that there is some other inherent reason for personal strangeness. that makes me happier to believe than simply the mechanical
consequence of drug interaction.

Ahhh, much better!
I know just the people you're talking about. A few were indeed on drugs of some sort (usually just pot, and even then it was only, like once a month), but it was always particularly cool to find the ones who are just natrually strange, quirky, and still function in the real world.
Well, usually.

For some reason this suddenly reminded me of this Seattle muscial that my father and I used to hang out with and I did a video for.
Pretty sure this isn't entirely the kind of guy you're talking about, but still makes for some interesting listening!

I caught most of the musical references but for "Sleepyhead" I keep thinking of the Passion Pit song. I'm not sure it fits, though.
Also, I know it seems pretentious but I adore the weird, off-center personalities who seem constantly drugged but are clean. Most people I've met who come off that way are really just quiet but I do know a couple who are genuinely detached from what goes on around them because, importantly, they're busy thinking about really awesome stuff. I admire that. So yeah, love this character already.

I love it too and agree that it's a very novel song of the best kind. If I were a more inexperienced listener, I'd be frustrated that I bought Manners on the basis of that song only to hear a record not very similar at all. Fortunately, the rest of the CD is solid even lacking the manic verve of "Sleepyhead" and that's because, with every enjoyable "novelty" song there is a talented songwriter/musician who hopefully puts that talent to use in other ways.
also, i think you might like this possibly; http://youtu.be/H1ecdIqv41Q [though I'd recommend a hi-quality listen here; http://www.last.fm/music/America+Ad...../Monster+Show]
