At Rocky Mountain Fur Con 2010, I gave my third Voice Acting Workshop panel. I'm always interested in finding new ways to make my panel more engaging for the attendees, so for this one, I passed on my usual basketball projects to write scripts based on the con's Western theme.
Usually I spend the first hour of my panel demonstrating and instructing, then the second hour recording. I flipped things this time, opening up with auditions for parts in the three Western scripts I had written (with an enormous amount of help from
Alex F. Vance). After everyone had a chance to audition, I asked the attendees to vote on which script they'd like to see produced and who should play the roles. After they told me their preference, we recorded the lines, and then I edited together as much of the project as I could in the time remaining, showing everyone what I was doing with a video projector off my laptop.
This panel had a much different vibe from the panels I held at Furry Fiesta 2010 and FA: United 3. I learned a lot doing this, and instead of walking away with a podcast, I walked away with a bunch of auditions and a dramatic short. And two leftover scripts.
The three scripts told a story arc about a cougar outlaw hired to track down and kill a pack of coyote thieves. He's promised a reward by the bloodhound mayor and wolf sheriff of the little Western town the coyotes robbed, though the cougar is suspicious from the start. Especially when a fox shoots at him with a high-powered rifle right after he dispatches of the coyotes.
This scene takes place when the cougar and fox meet.

Thanks, Xyk! Yet again, I'm blown away with how good my recordings come out with that AT4040. Though I'm struck by how much less punch the Mackie 400F has over the JOE MEEK VC3Q I used at FA: United 3. I think if you listen to my last con-recorded podcast, you'll hear what I mean.
. . . sorry, didn't mean to go all audio nerd on ya.

Well next time, I think you should just bring in an ATV530-X and crank the phantom power to 11 . Bus that through a Vorbis 8(q), invert the compression, and add a touch of flange. If the harmonics clip out, bounce it out with a low frequency room tone, solo that through a VOX12 interface, and let the band pass mix out the rest. And if the phase doesn't synch, add nutmeg!
*snicker snicker snicker*
Seriously, though, I hope you do more of these con-themed panels in the future. It really was a bunch of fun!

Sweet, glad you like it! And thanks again for attending my panel! I think next year I'll absolutely bring a podcast script-- I like being able to feature as many con-recorded voices as possible. This new format I used at RMFC was fun to try out, but in the end, it's kind of a bummer that only two attendees got to hear a final product made from their voices.
Thanks for the thumbs-up! Ever since taking this panel and have been getting wonderful and positive reviews from my friends all-around, I want to work more on voice acting and see where that takes me. A majority of my friends say I'm a much of a character IRL as is already so why not add some life to some fictional characters out there! With the RMFC2010 panel being my first ever experience with voice acting, it's opened up a window of interest for me.
Finding a strong contrast in voices is very important for 2-voice scripts like this one. And yeah,
wolfrunner and Glen have really good voices with totally different sounds. Putting them together works very well for a small dialogue scene like this!
