Recently sighted at PAX pushing his upcoming game "Duke Nukem Forever" (and a shoo-in for the fifth horseman of apocalypse if the game ever comes out), here we have Duke Nukem.
After conquering places like The Land Of The Babes, he's made an appearance in Second Life, "Where the girls come easy and they put out fast, 'course they're all really guys but hey, who's gonna ask?"
Somehow, SL seems like a fitting retirement home for The Duke. How far the mighty have fallen!
The Duke Nukem avatar is a freebie, one of several piece set released by Psyra in bygone days. You might still find The Duke floating around in places like Yadni's Junkyard or The Freebie Warehouse.
Duke Nukem belongs to ID Software or whoever owns him at the moment. Avatar made by "Psyra Extraordinaire".

I don't know what the deal was, though the story that seems most likely to me is the one where they tried to develop new things into the existing engine only to see the same innovations come out in different video games, eventually forcing them to start from scratch again and again...
Certainly I think the development lead probably deserves most of the blame for the game's stagnation in development limbo. He wanted to release the best, most innovative new game for the next Duke Nukem title...it became his baby, and it had to be better than all the others. When he saw some other game come out that was doing what they were planning to do with Duke Nukem Forever, it was "back to the drawing board"... One has to admit, after Duke 3D video game development really took a flying leap in terms of pace and diversity. And First Person Shooters was the fastest growing genre in the industry. Maybe they weren't expecting that, not that it's really excusable in the end...
In any rate, myself and many others are surprised they're still going at it. The game has become the butt of a running joke in the video gaming industry for it's status as perennial vapor ware. There's a consensus that if/when Gearbox finally releases the game they've purchased/inherited from the steaming ruins of ID Software/3D Relams, it won't be anything worth writing home about.

It's true, there have been many imitators (though Duke himself was an imitator; watch Evil Dead 2 sometime).
The games that "filled in the gap" are too numerous to mention, but I believe you are right in your claim that Serious Sam was the closest to the Duke in terms of attitude and style.

duke nukem has had it rough in the 21st centry being removed from steam having a crappy kinda spine off (bombshell) - dnf mosty was hated...and now hes more irelevent than ever as it seems hes been dead seanc 2011...i kidna hope it stayes that way as i can tell NONE of the peaple behind duke nukem understands him...the onely one that does seems to be the voice actore joun st jon ...kinda sad
Mr. Nukem's problem is that he is kind of a one-trick pony. The character has been unable to adapt from his beginnings of 90's adult humor themed badass. This is mostly because the parent company kept such a tight fist on the development of his games.
DNF was ok. It had it's flaws but I've played worse games. It was a good attempt to bring him up to today's standards but more work needs to be done. At this point I figure they don't have anything to lose if they either want to try again or let it sit and die. It could go either way.
