just to show what I've been working on for the past while, I got my hands on the new Warhammer Island of Blood starter kit. Looooots of pretty things!
Well, the Skaven aren't my favorite army, and really, of the two armies, I like them stylistically less than the Elves, so I'm doing them first to get them out of the way. Not a whole lot of work going into them, just some base colors, and washes. I haven't even flocked the bases yet, and I'm debating wether or not I should do so. Also pictured here, are some scratch-built movement trays, built from sheet plastic, and sections of sprue!

nice. the hobby store down the street from me does game sessions and i watch sometimes they will let me use there armies and join in :3 i used to have my own but as it was i couldnt afford to even paint them let alone build em so i sold em on ebay x-x i wanna get back in but i kinda need to be able to afford it first though >.>
Biggest bit of advice I can give, start SMALL. For that matter, keep yourself to one or two armies. If there's a GW store nearby, you can get away with using the store-copy books and all, so the costs of paper isn't too much of a factor. But yeah, pick an army you like, both aesthetically and in terms of gameplay and backstory, and STICK WITH IT. Build it piece by piece, and just be patient with it.
The big stuff, see if you can't get friends and family to give you the stuff for Christmas or something. In general, since GW has started switching to plastic minis (I'm guessing the days of all-metal are what was killing your checkbook) the hobby, while still expensive, has gotten alot cheaper and easier to keep financially on top of. I mean, $40 for a big box of guys that'll take me weeks to paint, is cheaper than alot of other hobbies I know of.

i already decided on an army to build i just need the cash for em lol it was either chaos demons or deamons of chaos...ones 40k and there both to my liking so i get them a lil confused XD as for my family/friends buying them for me...ill have more luck winning the lottery. ill be able to get into the game sometime i hope but i have other worries at the moment...like when im getting my next paycheck and for how much DX
You know, you can use them in both games, right? Just use the square bases. They won't look as good being spread out like a 40k unit, but if you want to use them for Fantasy, they'll rank up in a heartbeat. Same models, just slightly different stats (if any difference)
