Prompt: borderline
“Zogat, Balakrishnan-jih,” the vir said as the Dhole-Akita canine entered the room and sat down.
“Zogat, k’Ven-jih,” the canine femme replied in a courteous tone. “Why have you requested this meeting?”
“I have heard a rumor.”
Balakrishnan snorted. “I’m not proposing marriage to you.”
Navot’s tail thumped against the floor as her ears went straight up. “I – “
“That was a joke,” the canine said with a dismissive flip of one paw. “Now, what rumor have you heard?”
The vir took a breath to steady herself before saying, “I have heard that you are to be Terra’s new Foreign Minister.”
“A member of the Regency Council offered me the post,” Balakrishnan said, “and I have accepted. The Legislature still needs to confirm it, so I’m not leaving just yet.” The canine quirked an eyebrow at the sudden twitch at the tips of the vir’s fingers. “You seem troubled by this, k’Ven-jih.”
It took an effort to stop her fingerclaws from emerging from their sheathes. “I find myself strangely – I believe the Terran phrase is ‘ov tu mīnz’ about this news, Balakrishnan-jih.”
“Aka? I will be in a position to influence Terra’s policy toward the Empire,” the canine said. Balakrishnan stood. “I will call another meeting after I’m confirmed, so we can say goodbye. Narchak,” and before k’Ven could stop her the Dhole-Akita left the room.
Navot k’Ven felt her claws pop out of their sheathes, making soft ticking sounds against the tabletop as she pondered what the Terran had told her. That Balakrishnan didn’t like shlani was not necessarily a secret, nor was it hard to miss that she feared the Empire’s might. Her posting, so close to the Regency and the young Emperor’s ears, could help Terra steer a proper course that would avoid resuming the war.
However, she could also wield her knowledge of the shlani as a weapon, and war could take many forms. There were ample examples of that from Kashlanin history, notably (and most recently) the Hearth Crisis.
There were advantages and disadvantages, and she felt that she was walking a very narrow path as the vir considered what the future might bring.

Okay.
Zogat: Similar to 'aloha,' a standard greeting in Kashlanin. Having been Terra's ambassador to the race for a decade, Balakrishnan speaks it fluently.
-jih: Honorific similar to -san in Japanese, but this one is native to India and the Punjab (although usually spelled -ji).
Vir: Kashlanin word for 'female.'
Narchak: More formal greeting or farewell in Kashlanin; it's a contraction of the phrase "may your children be well."
Anulka-Mei Balakrishnan is a Terran canine, a mixed Dhole and Akita. Sandy brown fur, fluffy curled tail, rather thin.
Navot k'Ven is Kashlanin; picture a dog's head on a woman's body, with feline eyes and a prehensile monkey's tail, standing over 7 feet tall. Her fur color's a uniform medium brown, eye color a rather vivid yellow.
