You new around here?
For how happy I am with this piece it is nowhere near as happy as I am with how this new scanner treated it. Three keyboards, a new pci card, two OSs, 4 scsi cables, 2 terminators, over a month of screwing with it, and the surfaces of however many teeth I have though the act of grinding and finally it is up and running. Its a old 12x18 scanner I picked up for 20 dollars. The owner of the shop is really nice, he gave me the scsi controller, cables, and terminators and such to get it working but at the time I had no idea that it wasn't as simple as just putting it all together. It is kind of odd that even by today's standards it is actually still a nice interface, a lot of servers use it for their HDDs and such, no idea if things are changing since the speeds of sata, Usb, firewire, etc are all increasing practically everyday, but that kinda goes to show how nice of a format scsi is seeing as it was first developed in the 80s and is still competition for many of today's interfaces. Anyway, likely the main reason most people don't use it is it is its kinda a bastard. From needing a controller, to its big ass cables and ports to the 20 something different sized heads and end combinations you pretty much need a dresser full of cables, terminators etc to be sure that you will be able to make anything scsi work. And now that it is falling out of favor it only makes things harder to deal with. I happened to have a version of XP that no longer supported the scanner but I didn't know that until I ruled out the 30 something other problems that could of been the issue. Anyway, long story short, this was a project for me, frustrating, but in the end there were no risks or anything for me, for someone that might need to connect this to scan in something they needed for a work or something, regardless of how much slower something like USB 1.0 is it is way easier to just plug in and play for the most part. I would say most people don't care how fast scsi is if its no easy to use which is likely one of the larger reasons why so few use it now a days. But for all of ya looking for cheap equipment, it might be an option to think about, I can now connect up to 7 different devices on this controller and often scsi is cheap to pick up since people don't want it anymore. But after getting this scan it is better than most anything I have gotten using a camera or a scanner that was two sizes too small.
