GIMP
I really don't like gimp, I never did, this is the farthest into a picture I've ever gotten with it. It's a terrible program :P It's not that the actual drawing is that terrible, but it's just so un-user friendly. I think the problem is it's open source which means a computer geek made it, you know an engineer. Well engineers live in a different world than real people, if you don't believe me look at any Douglass aircraft built before about 20 years ago. Anyway I think this program was made by a software engineer who didn't have drawing in mind, I think it's for editing not creating and I really don't like it :P
So yeah I think I'll stick to OC, might try out that SAI thingy people have been going on about.

I sketch in OC and then take it to GIMP to finish because... gimp really ain't that great for sketching. It's WONDERFUL for finishing... [ http://www.furaffinity.net/view/4393485 ] but not for sketching. =/
I use GIMP for coloring: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3820939/
...Then again, I added the whole "GIMP Paint Studio" script and brush set 'cause the default is so awful, so... yeah.

I use Gimp because it's open source and free, because I don't have the $800 to shell out for a licensed, business copy of Photoshop, nor will I download a pirated copy. That being said? I pretty much hate the interface. It's fine for cleaning up scans for posting, but you'd have to work around all of it's non-user-friendly issues to actually try and make art with it. I've heard Gimpshop is better, but last I knew, there wasn't a mac version of it, so I'm stuck with the original.
I like how a bunch of people have been like "Well compared to PhotoShop it may not be that good..." I haven't used photoshop for a year or two. Most furry artists honestly don't need something as powerful as photoshop. I've been using OC which is cheap or free depending on the version. I haven't looked into the later ones but PaintShopPro is a good alternative to Photoshop and it's pretty cheap too, I haven't used it in forever either because I mostly don't need it :P But the point is it's interface is not bad compared to photoshop, it's bad compared to everything I've ever used including Corel products in the mid 90's. Open source and free doesn't automatically mean good.
Yeah OC won't work in MacOS or LINUX without an emulator which is slightly annoying. If wine worked better and didn't eat my meager computer resources I'd probably run linux most of the time but I need my windows for OC and stuff. But if you have a decent new-ish mac you can probably run OC in the virtual machine thingy, although without a tablet the point is kinda moot. But if you do get a new tablet one day you can try making OC1 work and do dumb networked art with people XP
Well, yeah... you're certainly entitled to your opinion. But I've used GIMP for many years now, and haven't had any problems with usability after version 2.4. And one Photoshop problem that GIMP doesn't have is the need to shell out $$$ every time there's an upgrade.
For me, it works. It's a tool. A good tool. Not perfect, but certainly good enough that I'm not seeking a replacement or hankering after Photoshop.

Why do you GIMP fanboys keep bringing up photoshop? I know all about photoshop, and photoshop is a great tool, but I don't really like photoshop for drawing either. Photoshop is well worth the money if you're a professional and using it to it's potential. I found that I was not using photoshop to anywhere near it's potential and I'm not a professional so I stopped, and I've been hapily using OC now for years. Maybe they've fixed it since I posted this a year or so ago, but when I tried it, it had about the same user friendliness as a brick with glass shards sticking out of it. As I said to someone else above, I don't consider GIMP to be worse than Photoshop, I consider GIMP to be worse than just about anything out there.
