I remember both of them. I was devastated when Ruffian was put down.
It's called the X factor. It has now been identified and is carried on the female chromosome. Ergo, a stallion cannot pass it to a colt. He can pass it to a filly who can pass it to a colt, which is why none of Secretariat's sons were even close to the Father.

Nice. Truly amazing athletes that will carry over as titans of their ages.
To bad no one here seems to know much about Grey Hound racing. Personally I can never indorse either being familiar with how many dead grey hound carcasses are often located stemming from that industry. Beautiful animals however. Truly incredible athletes.
If I'm not mistaken TB's are faster at a long run than a grey hound but a grey hound is the third fastest animal at acceleration. Honestly thats what folks dont realize, speed vs accelaration.
Tho Salukis have been clocked at over 50 mph, slightly above GH, and are better at distance indurance.
