Its not something that should be done and used lightly. English brains function reading past tense as happening. Here the way you shape that distant, but engaged first person perspective creates a frame lawyer for that present tense, digital worlds can also too serve as a frame layer. The only place it was awkward were the first lines of the story because that frame was not establish starting with dialogue.
