Hey guys! How are you doing? Hope youre doing fine. I hate to say that Ive been worried about something for quite a while and Id like to ask everyone here for an opinion.
Its about my payment processor. As you know, most of everyone here use PayPal to pay the artist for commissions, ychs, adobts, etc. but as an artist and living in Thailand, Ive been having some problems lately...
One day I got some bad news from PayPal Thailand. To keep it short and simple, it seems like PayPal is changing their policy and they want us (Thai freelancers) to register our business as a "company". That means we (me included) have to do a lot of paperwork and get taxed in an even higher rate!!!!! I have no idea why they did that but its not going to be good for me who use PayPal as the only platform to receive the money X(

Im in the chat group of Thai furry community. Weve been having some discussion about what we should do next and right now, I think the best bet for me is to move to another payment platform such as Payoneer, Skrill, or any other platform that doesnt do what PayPal is trying to do right now. I dont know what the next move is for other Thai artists but I assume that theyre either registering their Paypal account as a company and get taxed heavily, or looking for (other platforms / another platform) like I do right now. And this is what I wanna ask you guys...
In case I stop using PayPal and move to something like Payoneer instead, will everyone here be okay with sending payments to me via those platforms instead? Im not sure if they support cross-platform transaction or not, but in case they dont, I think you will have to make a new account, deposit money, and send it to me through Payoneer instead. Im afraid that because of the extra work on the customer part, some of you guys might stop supporting me.
[for more information about Payoneer, you visit the website HERE]
So yeah... Id like to ask for your opinion on it. If most of you guys are okay with it, then Ill start using Payoneer real soon, but if not Ill try to look for other solutions.
Thank you very very much for your time reading through this. Feel free to tell me what you think. Every single opinion is very appreciated

You know my opinion, but I have no problems in adapting to another platform if It makes things easier for you. I think you are a worth and nice artist so that there will be very few who would stop supporting you. I will try to investigate more alternatives that you can think about ~
Hmm... if the tax rate really is that much higher when you register as a company (I'm assuming "Sole proprietorship" isn't an option in Thailand?) then Payoneer seems like the best solution for now.
It seems to support international payments with a Payoneer account, and even bank transfer or credit card payments (for the EU, US and possibly elsewhere) so your clients don't necessarily need to make a Payoneer account to pay you as long as you make a payment request, which makes doing business and supporting you easier. :)
My only concern is that the Thai government will start regulating other payment providers in addition to PayPal to make sure they get the added revenue from freelancers and small businesses. Essentially give them the same restrictions. That makes this only a temporary solution and you might be forced to register as a company eventually.
Of course, if Payoneer lives up to their promises, then it probably might be better to take that delay, no matter what. The concern would be the drop in potential clients. People are slow to trust new payment providers since they do give them very sensitive payment details, after all.
Personally? I would use Payoneer, and use PayPal alongside it for as long as you can. Make people aware of the change in payment provider coming up and how little that will change things for them.
You could also try to reach out and make people adopt Payoneer accounts during this time, by making either exclusive offers for people willing to go to Payoneer, or a small discount if they do. Essentially, give people a carrot for registering and making the move smoother.
But, that's just brainstorming, heh.
I'm sure that the people currently supporting you will continue to do so, as long as they are able :)

im not sure about Sole proprietorship stuff but I think itll be available soon (maybe in a year?) and I cant wait that long.
Im not sure if everyone can use Payoneer or not since I heard that someone cant use that cuz its not available in their country but if everyone can use that, thatll be really great X3 I have to do some more research about it then.
thank you very very much for your help hun

I would also like to suggest Ko-if. It’s much more available than payoneer. We can pay through PayPal, or directly with card. No fees for “donations” either. But I do wonder if you can see each donation and who sent it.
Payoneer would loose quite a few users as it’s not available in most everywhere yet.

ko-fi itself isnt a payment processor though. to pay out of ko-fi you need to use paypal or stripe. so it would depend if stripe is available in thailand which from a quick google i'm not sure it's one of the 46 supported countries even though thai currency is supported :(
I feel like the issue might spread to other payment platforms over time. As freelance work becomes more and more common, governments all over the world want to try and regulate and get more taxes from it. While I'm not a commisionner of yours I'll still support you and if I ever get to commission you I'd go through whichever payment plateform/system is more suited for your needs.
That said if the reason why Paypal is changing their TOS in Thailand is due to change in legislation, you might want to investigate the specifics with the help of a lawyer together with other Thai artists.

yeah that seems to be the case x.x it is what it is tho. world is changing which I hope its changing in a good way (assuming those taxes goes to the government that really wants to improve my country which I dont think its what they're doing right now >:O)
but yeah! Ill see what I can do! thanks hun

yeah that sucks man... unfortunatelly either its using IBT (international bank transfers) whicih fees are huge, like 50 bucks each time something is sent, good for huge ammounts because that fee is static, but yeah, seems to me you'll have swith to payoneer if this keeps X_x
As much as I'd like to agree with Payoneer, it is limited to a very few countries, including everything in Europe except the UK. This means a lot of clients - including myself - wouldn't get a chance to pay.
I wonder how Ko-Fi would work. I'm not entirely sure of its inner workings, but it could be a vialble workaround maybe? Plus, Paypal users can pay throug it as well.

Honestly, PayPal is the same as FA. It's shit, but people stay there because it gets the most input from people. I would absolutely recommend Payoneer and TransferWise, and knowing how you're a pretty requested artist, people wouldn't have a problem creating an account to pay you there. Another option would be Telegram Payments 2.0, which uses trusted banking apps to transfer money tax-free through Telegram!
I feel like most of everything has been said already.
If PayPal is giving you more difficulties at this immediate moment than you care for, then I'm all for you deciding to move to something else. At the same time, you do bring up a valid point about the customer having to take "extra steps" in creating an account and other information for something they may not use otherwise. Some may be perfectly fine with it, others may be a bit more hesitant. There's also the possibility that with increased freelancing work being accepted worldwide, other companies may eventually also follow the same lead as PayPal based on your country's laws.
I guess the question from here is what you'd think would be the best option to move to and how effective it'd be long term, considering the setup process from both ends, availability in most areas, and overall making others "aware" of the option you choose (namely because of how commonplace PayPal is). Keep in mind that there's a good chance that this will continue to be a "work in progress" for quite a while, and there may be some shifts in terms of who's willing to buy, in what ways, and when. But, it's the "cost" of doing business in general and I'm sure you'll come to a satisfactory conclusion eventually.

some would love to keep supporting me but they cant use it because its not available in their country too :( thatll be very bad cuz itll hard on both me and the customers. if I cant find another way, I have to keep using paypal and go register the business or whatever they want. but im sure the customers wont have to take any extra steps tho :)
but thank you so much for your help. Ill see what I can do. thanks again

It's a very interesting topic for me, cos I am having problems with paypal atm too and that brings me to the idea that being dependent on one payment system is horrible, when it's your only source of income.
I'd love to chat with you over telegram again and find out what you have chosen after all
