Made a quick sketch because I had to get it out of my system.
Grail's last shared moment with Gustavo in the main campaign was...well, I suppose "dramatic" might be one word to describe it. Who knew that the weird magic crystal that he had been carrying and trying to figure out since the very beginning was going to serve such a dramatic purpose as being used by the BBEG, being used for dangerous ritual, and being used in a desperate last-ditch secondary ritual in an attempt to delay the advent of the Godwyrm.
Grail was originally going to attempt using the crystal on himself. He had deciphered the glyphs as best he could, but they were running out of time, and he even admitted that it there was every chance it wouldn't work - he didn't have the usual proper pieces. But then Gustavo told him to use him instead - giving the order as Grail's Captain - and Grail ultimately conceded.
He did everything he could, but they both knew it was a long shot. And they both knew it would probably kill whoever was the conduit. Grail directed the ritual, with Gustavo as the focus, and while they were unable to properly seal the Godwyrm, they had enough precious time to get most of the inhabitants of the island to a safer place - by using a scroll that Grail had been given privately in those last hours, landing them and their collection of refugees in another world. This same world being the one that the BBEG fell into upon his defeat.
Grail isn't one to sit around, and while others settled into new lives, he went on to follow his own pursuits. He would keep his promises...
Originally shared with Patrons, but I've decided to share this with the public after a while, as it kinda provides some context behind potential future artwork for Grail post-campaign.
For those who may not know, Gustavo the rogue was probably Grail's closest buddy in their adventuring party. So this hit him fairly hard.
