chopperjoe Jasper knows her life isn’t perfect. The trials and tribulations that plagued her teenage years and early adulthood left scars on her spirit. From being ousted as a “demon” and watching her parents mercilessly cut down as they protected her, only to be chased by those same monsters who murdered her family. Jasper spent those bloody years on the run, training her magic powers, finding weapons, scrounging from one town to the next just to survive, all while constantly looking over her shoulder. It was a hard life. The memories would never leave.
But in these moments, being held by her loving husband, those days felt like little more than a bad dream. Drako, her obsidian dragon, her mighty king, snuggled close. He put a hand atop her swollen belly, rubbing it softly. She smiled and placed her arm atop his. They felt a kick, and giggled together. Jasper stared down at her tummy. The child they shared. The life they created together, growing everyday. Three years ago, she never would’ve dreamed of being here. It seemed too good to be true. Sometimes, it still did. But this wasn’t one of those times. ith him at her side, it never felt so real.
“The little one is getting restless,” Drako whispered as he wrapped his other arm around Jasper’s breasts.
“He wants to see his daddy,” Jasper whispered back, eyeing him.
They stared at each other, enjoying the other’s gaze and touch. njoying the peace they had earned, after so many battles together.
Drako saved Jasper from her life of endless running. He’d never admit it, as those were not his original intentions. At first, he simply needed her divine powers, those same ones that wrought her accusations of demonhood. But Jasper knows he’s a good man, no matter how rough an exterior he puts up. He cares deeply for others, be they his subjects, his friends, his allies, or his queen. He always cared for her, from the beginning.
“You sure it’s a son?” Drako asked.
“I know it is,” Jasper glanced back down, “I’ve felt it.”
Another moment of silence passed. Drako kissed her neck.
“ell, regardless of that,” he continued, “There’s one thing in my heart that I know for a fact.”
“And what is that?” she asked.
“That this little one will be the happiest child ever,” he smiled down at her, “because they’ll have the greatest woman who’s ever lived as their mother.”
Jasper looked up at him, beaming, eyes nearly in tears. He returned the expression. Jasper reached up a hand to brush his face. A violent blush formed on Drako’s cheek as he struggled to hide his burgeoning happiness. She chuckled at that, as the two of them sank closer together, closing their eyes. Drako whispered into her ear,
“I love you, my queen.”
Jasper didn’t need to respond, for her heart was already his.
For now, all was right in the world.
