That would be an interesting study I'm sure... to me, these early tanks were nothing short of incredible just based upon what they had to build with. The same goes for their airplanes. By the end of the war, these aviators were flying and fighting above 12K feet without oxygen.
I read that the very first tank battle was a success, except there was no follow up being that the army had no idea what they had, and never planned that far ahead. Had the attack been properly coordinated, the British cold have broken through the lines and lines of trenches and pushed all the way to Germany.

It's very easy to sit back with a century's worth of experience and practice and laugh about how dumb they were not to have done it -this- way the first time out of the gate.
