On one hand, they look like harmless "pill-bugs" which make the scene somewhat comical; Girls overreacting and killing sweet (albeit giant sized) harmless bugs which are ultimately good for the environment. On the other hand, I recognize those antennae from somewhere (the flood from halo) so I guess they're not all that harmless lol.
Hmm, I guess I didn't think that far into them, but the design just came from my idea to cross a pill-bug with a squid.
From their swarming creepiness I'd assume they overwhelm hapless travelers and goo-cocoon them as some sorta food-source/incubator-host thing. Whatever's most terrifying :P
