Actually, neither did the Germans. The lighter-than-air gas isn't what exploded the Hindenburg. It was researched that the lacquer used to coat the outer envelope was rather electro-static sensitive, and built up a rather nasty charge, which set the cloth on fire, which led to the disaster...
