It's inspired by the "cross fox" fur pattern, basically because cross foxes, particularly the ones with more vibrant colors, essentially look like "this is literally an IRL fire Pokemon" lol. The idea with the orange flecks is that sie is "double coated" -- there's an undercoat and a topcoat, like (eg) many species of domestic dogs and like the American Red Fox, a melanistic variant of which is what cross foxes are -- but in Skye, the two coats are largely different colors. Where it's black with orange 'flecks' it looks like embers amongst coals, or like a charcoal grill where the briquettes have not quite yet lit but are almost there. Where it's a sort of darker orange (what I'd call "russet orange", which 1970s America mostly called "burnt orange" IIRC) with orange 'flecks' it's like a fire in a woodstove or fireplace. When sie walks, or really moves at all, the flecks change place, giving the effect of moving flame and dancing embers.
Every part of Skye has personal meaning to me, in one way or another. Life has not been kind to me, and Skye is, in a sense, an alter ego of me. As such: the number of times I have been burnt, in ways no burn cream can ever touch, no First Aid Kit can ever help, no nurse or doctor or hospital can ever reach... and yet I endure. Like a phoenix, I rise from the ashes... each and every time. As Skye, I literally have this part of me on display... I have taken the fire that has burnt me, the tool others have used to try and tear me down, tried to use to destroy me... I have made it my own to the point that I wear it without fear.
