This story introduces a new character that will appear in future stories. I also consider this the last of the introduction stories, so future works are gonna be more their own things.
Emily is reunited with an old friend who has a special game they can play.
Bluff n Puff
By: Soda-Cola
Emily Conners was very excited today, the young female otter was about to finally reunite with her childhood friend, Kathryn Abara. Emily and Kathryn first met in kindergarten, and were considered inseparable until after middle school when Kathryn’s father got a job transfer and he and his family had to move away. It’s been almost a decade since they last saw each other, but Emily had gotten word that the Abara family had moved back into town and that Kathryn will now be attending Gladville University.
Emily was now “patiently” waiting in the cafeteria for Kathryn to arrive. As she was waiting, her mind was buzzing with many thoughts. Will she recognize me? Will I recognize her? How much did she change? Will she still like me? Will I still like her? Her train of thought was interrupted when she saw a familiar looking caracal. “Kat!” Emily yelled.
Kathryn Abara—Kat for short—was a caracal nearing her twenties. She had smokey gray fur with short messy black hair and wore a black dress that gave her an almost gothic look. A little different then how Emily remembered her, but Kat did always have a rebellious side so going goth probably made sense. “Emily!” Kat yelled back before embracing her old friend in a big hug. “Oh my god, it’s so great to see you again!” said Kat.
“It’s great to see you too, it’s been so long,” replied Emily. “You’re looking a bit different nowadays. I like it, it fits you.”
“Thanks. You look mostly the same, just more beautiful.”
“Aw, thanks,” Emily said blushing. “Let’s head back to my dorm, we have so much catching up to do.”
“That we do. Lead the way.”

The reunited friends made their way to Emily’s dorm to catch up on each other’s lives. Kat was shocked to find out that Emily had developed an affinity for inflation, considering just how against it she used to be. It was also surprising to find out that Jason—a red wolf—and Toby—a ribbon seal—were also into inflation. Emily hoped that Kat wouldn’t mind that she likes to inflate now. However, Kat was actually relieved because she also had something surprising to say.
“Magic?” asked Emily.
“Yep,” replied Kat. “After I moved away, I bought this old book with spells, and after learning how to do them I decided to learn as much magic as I can. And as you can see, since I know magic now, I tried to go for a witchy look.”
“Cool. Can I see that book?”
“Sure,” Kat handed Emily the spell book. It was ancient looking, bound by black leather. Inside were yellowed pages that had scribbles and notes penciled into them. The spells ranged from enchanting small objects to transforming things and people. Many of the pages seemed to have been ripped out of the book, “Those were the dangerous spells,” explained Kat. “I’d rather use the tamer spells for pranks and stuff.” As Emily scrolled through the pages, a section that caught her eye were spells that can cause inflation in different ways, from inflating with air to filling with juice like giant berries. “Pretty cool right? I’m sure they were deadly and terrifying when this book was written. But now we can use them for pranks and pleasure.”
“That’s so cool!” exclaimed Emily. “Do you think we can try one of these spells?”
“Actually, I do have something that I’ve been wanting to try out.” Kat reached into her bag and took out some bandage patches. “I charmed them with a spell that causes a person to inflate whenever they tell a lie. I think the spell was for rich people who constantly brag, but I thought of a fun game we can play I call Bluff n Puff.”
“Bluff n Puff?”
“It’s like Truth or Dare. We each wear a patch and ask each other questions. If we bluff, we puff.”
“Sounds like fun. Let’s try it.”
Emily and Kat both got a patch and placed them on their arms. Kat got to ask the first question, “After I moved away, did you go out with Benny Lotson?”
Kat should know that Emily would never have gone out with that lothesome eel, no matter how many times he asked. But Emily was curious how the patches worked and wanted to test them out. “Yes I did,” she lied. Immediately, she felt a pressure in her tummy. When she looked down, she saw her belly inflating outwards. Her belly grew until she looked nine months pregnant, feeling her swollen tummy revealed that she inflated with air somehow. “Woah.”
“I knew you’d never go out with that guy. I’m glad you look like you’re enjoying it, because we’re just getting started.”

The next half hour went by with many back and forths but not much inflation. Both Kat and Emily were even with bellies as big as beach balls. It’s a little disappointing that the game was rather uneventful so far, but Emily thought of something that might spice things up. “Do you remember Alastor Jenkens?” Alastor was an elk Emily was dating in middle school but broke with her for some reason.
“Y-yes?” Kat replied.
“Do you know why he broke up with me?” Kat’s heart began to race. Why would Emily ask about that? Does she still have a thing for him? Despite wearing the cursed patch, she couldn’t help but lie. “No, no, of course not!” As soon as she finished her sentence, Kat’s belly puffed up to yoga ball size.
Emily was surprised, she didn’t really expect Kat to be responsible for her middle school break up, but the magic patches revealed the truth, she had to investigate more. “How are you responsible?”
“Um, I think it’s my turn,” Kat said nervously.
“Oh no, you’re getting off that easily. Now tell me, how are you responsible?” Emily had a very serious look on her face.
“I didn’t do anything.” Again, Kat’s body puffed up bigger and was beginning to round out.
“What did you do to make Al break up with me?”
“N-nothing!” Another bluff, another puff. Kat’s back was beginning to push out to match her front. As pointless as it was to keep lying, Kat just couldn’t help herself.
“What did you do?!” Emily was now yelling her questions. Why did Kat keep lying? What could she have done? Emily’s temper kept on rising.
“I didn’t do anything!” Kat puffed up again, her arms and legs were puffing up as well, becoming harder to move. Tears began running down her cheeks, Emily never spoke to her like this before.
“Why won’t you tell me?!”
“Because I had nothing to do with it!” Kat puffed up to six feet in diameter, her limbs becoming domes that couldn’t move anymore. Her tears were now streaming down the curve of her body.
“Why did you break us apart?!” Emily was now fuming with anger. Why won’t Kat just tell the truth?
“I. I!” If Kat keeps lying she’s likely to burst, and Emily wouldn’t want to be friends anymore. She can’t lose her again. Not again.
Emily’s face was contorted with anger. She had just about had enough of Kat and her lies. Why won’t she just, “TELL ME!!”
“HE HATED ME!!!!” Kat was now wailing, a river of tears flowing down her cheeks. Emily expected her to puff up again, but she didn’t. Kat’s telling the truth. “W-what do you mean?”
“When you two were going out, he often told me that he didn’t like me and wanted to leave you two alone forever. *sniff* I don’t know why he hated me so much, but I didn’t want to lose my best friend.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I didn’t think you’d believe me, so I told him something that would make him break up with you.”
“What exactly did you tell him?”
*sniff* “I told him Ally Allaire liked him.”
“Ally Allaire?! That prilly french poodle?! She was all looks with no actual personality!”
“Apparently that was enough for him to break up with you. I thought my plan worked, but ironically, my dad got transferred two days later. I’m sorry I never told you, and I’m sorry I lied to you. I’m so sorry.” Kat continued crying.
Emily took a moment to process everything, then burst into laughter. “I think you just saved me from making the worst decision in my life! I mean, if Al was only interested in my looks then he keep Ms. Allaire, and the way he talked to you, that’s…” Emily looked up to see just
what she put Kat though. “Oh Kat. I’m sorry.” She went over to give her friend a hug but Kat’s spherical body as well as her own beach ball belly made the task difficult. “Um, how do we get back to normal?”
“Just peel off the patch and you’ll deflate.”
Sure enough, when Emily peeled the patch off her arm, her stomach deflated back down to it’s flat size. She then helped get Kat’s patch off and the caracal deflated back to her normal skinny self, and the two were able to properly hug each other.
“I’m so sorry I never told you,” said Kat, some more tears escaping her eyes.
“It’s ok, I’m not mad at you anymore. But I do wish that you told me what Al said to you. If he didn’t want you around, then he totally wasn’t worth it.”
It was certainly a rough first night to say the least, but Emily had her best friend back. With all the new tricks Kat has learned, they are certainly going to have a lot of fun together, hopefully future games of Bluff n Puff won’t be as intense. For the rest of the night though, Kat and Emily were content to just hang out together, happy to be reunited.
