I've been playing Second Life for about 14 years, and while several avatars I made there ended up becoming long-term OCs of mine (Znap, Terrafrost and Alessio) I never put in the time and effort to make my primary OC in it. Well finally, that's changed!
Even though platforms like VRChat have been getting very popular over the last few years, I still prefer SL for several reasons. The primary communication method is text. which I prefer over voice, and adult content is permitted, unlike most modern-day platforms and websites. I plan to start uploading my SL backlog soon!

In the background is the Scalie Sports Center, which I built to look like an 80s bloc community sports building. It has a stadium, classroom, locker and shower room and a kinky storage shed! I play games like BARE and Bubblizer there with friends and many forfeits also happen here.

Thankfully yes! There's still no true replacement for it. VRChat is like Tumblr for virtual platforms. They want to keep it squeaky clean and they WILL ban people who use NSFW avatars. Neos allows adult content on private self-hosted servers, but that doesn't really aid in meeting new people, and being mostly VR-based, it still forces people to use voice chat most of the time and doesn't allow multi-tasking.
Man.. I was in on Second Life early on (are "idle casinos" still a thing where you sit in a chair and make money?). I got really discouraged though once users were walking around with amazing custom avatars and I got sneered whenever I used a store-bought one, and whenever I asked about getting a custom avatar, people wanted $400-$1000+ USD. So I stopped playing SL. :(
Yep, I never saw the attraction of those! But of course, I don't get gambling in general.
Most things can be found quite cheaply in SL and then you can combine and mod them together. Depending on what else you needed (perhaps just a custom skin, or a head), it could cost much less. $800 seems to be the going rate for fully bespoke VRChat avatars with additional features right now.
