The anecdote claims costume designer James Acheson gave a boatload of yarn to one Begonia Pope for her to knit a multi colored scarf for Tom Baker. Acheson purposely gave her more than was required so she would have enough of each color to complete the pattern. Ms. pope used the entire supply creating a scarf of absurd length, over 12 feet! originally, Acheson was going to cut it down to a more reasonable size, but then decided it might be incorporated "as is", emphasizing the eccentricity of Tom's character.
