The further he went the more palpable the carnage became; what was once a metropolis bustling with servants and synthetic creatures and trade and Geminis and culture was now nothing more but a decaying carcass. The world was a decaying carcass, the greed of his fellow man made it such. Sparks of gunfire here and there. A new stream of smoke coming for one district, then another. He admitted he had no love for this world. It could rot.
The more he climbed the cleaner and colder the air got and the few footholds he had. Going up the elbow the metal shell was noticeably less damaged, so he had to make his own cracks. One miscalculated jump, one wrong swing, and the sword plummeted. Just barely hanging on a piston. It did not deter him.
After much effort Franz found himself climbing through clouds of grey and gold contrasting yet mixing perfectly. The was like a thousand needles piercing his skin, but that couldn’t stop him from climbing. Yet as he climbed he didn’t think of any questions to ask her, nor did he think about the trek down. The desire to just be in her presence was burned into him.
How much time had passed?
Finally he reached palm. The sword the Titan had was broken, the blade discarded somewhere. Clinging on the fingers, climbing on the sword’s guard, he saw the woman again. She was blocking the sun, around them blue skies with strips of wispy white. This was the real world.
She gave him a concerned look and darted her gaze to the clouds beneath for a second as if contemplating the consequences for him. This was special, a kind of euphoria that consumerism and drugs couldn’t compete. Underneath the mask, he was smiling.
“Why did you follow me?” she asked, her voice filtered by genuine worry.
“I just needed to talk to you.”
He takes a deep breath.
“I don’t know who you are but you remind me of someone from my past life. Someone who was very special to me. Someone who…helped me when I needed it the most I think.”
He was right. She looked so much like her. Same face. The same loving eyes and soft lips, the identical hair.
“I don’t remember the details, but I feel it. You remind me of her, and I feel so alive.”
“But can you even remember her name, Franz?” asked the woman. “Do you even remember her name?”
Franz stood there perplexed. The image of her face in different times and places flashed but he could not recall her name. He had remembered his but forgotten hers, it filled him with disgust.
“Destroying who you are is the same as putting an end to it. The moment you lose yourself is the moment it was all over for you, Franz. There’s no…no remedy for that.”
“But I do remember! I remember you! I know for a fact you gave me so much to live for!”
“So, why did you erase your memory?”
