“Soooooo… you finished extorting my friend for all she’s worth?
“Hey, she was the one who offered. Is that really my fault?”
“… is that a yes oooor…?”
“Yeah, it’s a yes.”
Petie was feeling preeeetty good about himself at the moment as he watched Winnie nervously look over Hazel’s notepad, the delphox helping the ghost to calculate how much candy she was gonna owe him if she didn’t pay up soon. It was gonna be trick-or-treat buckets worth… and not the tiny toddler sized ones either! Mimi just seemed to be marveling at what she witnessed even as she shook her head softly and chuckled, opening her mouth to say something-
“You’re an eeeeeeevil little bear… I like it~”
Only to be cut off by a hatterene. Mimi’s mouth promptly snapped shut and she pointed back to the corner, Petie copying the motion on reflex out of annoyance. “Oh COME ON!” Angelica whined as she slunk back off. Waiting a moment for her to go Mimi sighed and gave him an apologetic smile “Aaaaanyway we’ll have Winnie work on a new story too, sorry this hasn’t been going well so far.”
Nodding slight as he remembered what he was actually doing before this “Right… you might wanna rethink some of this… how your stories are gonna go I mean…” Petie mumbled, shrugging a little… and nervously squirming as Mimi gave him an intrigued look “Oh? Am I mistaken ooooor does it sound like you actually have a suggestion~?” she cooed, cocking her head to the side as she smiled at him… and he furiously tried to backtrack.
“D-didn’t say that! I-I was just… sayin… I… I dunno nuthin’ b-bout stor-“
“Hold that thought~” Petie eeped as Mimi put a chubby finger to his lips and chuckled “We can talk about what you dunno nuthin’ ‘bout in a moment~” standing back up she grinned and threw her arms wide “After all… the shows not quite over now is it~?” she declared bombastically… and her smile fell into a pout as nobody replied. Glancing past her Petie could see Hazel was still preoccupied with working Winnie through candy numbers and interest rates.
Until Mimi cleared her throat very, very loudly which made one of the fox’s ears flick as she looked up. “I said… the show’s not quite over now is it.” the slowking repeated, her earlier bombast being fairly deflated. Hazel just look confused for a moment… before her massive ears shot straight up “Oh, OH! R-right! I-it’s not over! We promised four tales of terror after all!” she quickly said while pushing her notepad into Winnie’s hand before hurrying over to the cauldron.
Raising an eyebrow as he watched Hazel fumble to get the cauldron set back up Petie leaned back a little. Considering the last two were duds he wasn’t expecting much. “W-well it seems I’m the last one up…” Hazel said before taking a deep breath… and seeming to shift “and I have a bit of story to tell myself~” she quipped, pulling herself up to her full height and pulling a wand out of nowhere. She twirled it expertly and seemed to shake off the brief moment of panic from before like nothing.
“Quite a bit of a story actually~ Ooohohoho~”
Petie watched with wide eyes as Hazel laughed and the tip of her wand suddenly ignited. Holding one paw to the side of her face dramatically she whipped the piece of wood through the air, leaving a stream of light in it’s path. A stream of light that was joined by small, ghostly tufts of blue flame that circled her. Watching in awe he saw a handful of powder slowly float into the air… before, with a flick of her wand, slamming itself into the cauldron with a bright flash.
Petie blushed as he realized how caught up in the showmanship he’d gotten. Watching as deep red smoke started to billow out of the cauldron to pool around it like the last three times. Swishing her wand in the air over the pot the fox made the smoke spiral into strange shapes around her for the ghostly flames circling her to dance through. Meanwhile the flame on the end of the wand sent odd sparks dancing through the plumes for further effect. Hazel must have noticed she’d gotten his attention cause she almost purred the following words~
“For the enjoyment of our audience of one, I proudly present tonights closing feature~ A tale I like to title…”

“The Edge of the Forest”
Tell me little ones, have you ever been to the edge of the forest?
No, you haven’t been. Not to the REAL edge of the forest. That is good. You should NEVER go to the edge of the forest…
But for the curious among you, the ones who wonder “Why not?” let me tell you… tell you why you should never go there.
The first thing you need to know is how to find the edge of the forest… all you need to do is go to any forest, really any forest, and start walking… just. start. walking. If you’re to find the edge of the forest.. you’ll find it.
You’ll know you’re on the right track though if you notice the signs. Signs that anyone with an ounce of caution would take to mean “Turn back now”… but let me tell you. Tell you what you’ll see if you press onward.
First, you will notice how the forest just doesn’t seem to end… how, no matter how much you walk in a straight line, it just goes on and on with no sign of breaking. And the longer the walk the more you notice how hard it is to tell what time it is. Is that sunlight coming through the few gaps in the trees overhead or the pale light of a full moon? You’ll never be able to tell no matter how much you stare up…
Though… don’t linger too long~ Keep walking forward or turn back now but never linger. They. Don’t. Like. That. Now, who are they you might ask? Well you’ll know. You’ll know by the way the shadows move. How the shadows move even as the forest is deathly still. How the shadows flicker and shift and seem to follow you… or how they flicker more when you stop. How they seem to reach from the trees they’re attached to. To stretch, stretch along the ground… reaching FOR you…
So don’t linger~
You’ll also know them by the sounds. You might not notice at first. It’s hard to notice something that isn’t there after all. But you’ll notice. The lack of the sounds a forest should have. The wind through the branches and the leaves. The sound of birds above. The rustle and skitter of things on the ground. It’ll take a moment but you’ll notice…
And you’ll also notice what they sound like too. You might mistake it for the missing sounds even. It’s soft, quiet… like what you might imagine something skittering around the forest or hopping from branch to branch in the trees might sound like… but it’s not. After all… still branches and plants don’t creak and rustle. They also most certainly do not whisper. Quiet, oh so quietly, so you can barely hear it. So you can’t be sure it’s there… but it’s there~ As for what they are whispering…
It’s better you don’t know, so you should keep on walking.
The next sign you’re on your way to the edge of the forest will be the mist creeping through the trees and along the ground. Mist that shouldn’t be there. Mist that doesn-[/center]

“Hold it. Hold. It.”
“Eh?”
“You’ve lost them by this point.”
“… I what?”
“You’ve lost them by this point. Heck, you lost me.” Petie said, sighing as he rubbed his temples in annoyance “I was wondering when you’d hurry up and get to the point… and do you think a bunch of little kids have more patience than I do?”
To Hazel’s credit she didn’t take the easy insult opportunity Petie, belatedly, realized he’d given her. Instead she looked shocked, offended, and embarrassed all at once. Fumbling over her words she almost dropped her wand into the cauldron, all her flames and effects having died out, before clearing her throat and managing to stutter out “W-well I was just trying to build atmosphere is all. I… I thought I could add a little mid-telling and rack up the tension…”
“Hazel. Sweetie. We’ve talked about your ab-libs before.” Mimi said as she rested a hand on the fox’s shoulder. Petie watched Hazel’s ears just droop (which he found rather impressive given all the fluff that should keep them up) as the slowking continued “The last time you tried this with a young audience they got bored halfway through, somebody made a fart noise, and you completely lost them… and that was with eight year olds.”
“… s-so back to the drawing board?”
“I-if it’s anything you had a good start?” Petie offered weakly, feeling a bit bad at hearing just how sad Hazel sounded “You… you just kinda need to…” he fumbled his paw in the air for a tactful way to say this. “Get on with it?” Angelica suddenly offered, poking her head around on Hazel’s other side… before making an annoyed sound as Mimi didn’t even look up and just pointed back to the corner.
“Come ooooon! That’s four stories! Enough already!” the hatterene whined again… as Mimi tapped her cheek “… well… true enough… fiiiiiine, no more corner time… for now.” the slowking said as Angelica made what Petie assumed was a happy noise. To him it sounded like creepy giggling but fairy types could be weird or so he was told. He was more interested in the fact Angelica had just mentioned.
“Yeah, that was four stories. Soooo I’m gonna be going now-“
“WaitwaitwaitWAIT!”
“WHATDIDISAYABOUTPERSONALSPACE!!!”
Ignoring the fact his voice had pitched up to sound positively toddlerish with that yell Petie did his best to shove Winnie back out of his face. Unintentionally knocking himself backwards onto his bottom in the attempt since he’d been trying to get up to leave. The mismagius just giggled as he shoved at her cheeks with his chubby paws, utterly ignoring the attempt, and grinned “There’s one thing, one thing I wanna do before you gooooo~” she sing-songed cheerfully… as Petie could hear the confusion from the other witches even as he struggled to get away from the ghost.
“Winnie, we did promise him-“
“What are you talking about-“
“At least get out of his face-“
“I wanna hear his story~!”
“… what?”
Petie was pretty sure the other three had managed to say that in perfect synch with him as he stared blankly at the giggling, grinning ghost in front of him. “Yup!” she chirped… as her pause dragged out for what felt like a minute before she finally noticed everybody was staring at her like she was crazy “I mean… we told him our stories and he said he had a suggestion-“
“I never said that-“
“Soooo I wanna hear it~ The story he thinks might work better~” she said, her tone eager and cheerful… meaning she was probably serious and not just trying to put him on the spot. “Oooooooh yeah, I wanna hear it too~ Lets see Teddy Ruxpin do better~” Angelica crooned, not hiding in the least that she did wanna put him on the spot. Petie’s jaw dropped as he stared at them incredulously.
“No. Flat no. We already kidnapped him and made him sit through this. If he wants to give us some advice? Then fine… but that’s his call.” Mimi said, having taken Hazel’s place at the cauldron and looking like she was trying to clean it out or something, in a firm and no-nonsense tone of voice “Personally? I’d love to hear any advice he has to offer but if he wants to get up and leave right now? That’s his right.”
“U-um… I’d love to hear any advice too if that helps any.” Hazel piped up from the sidelines, blushing “I… it might help me rework my story… you said your mother was a writer, right?” the fox gave him a bright smile as she said the words Petie had been dreading hearing since he’d absentmindedly mentioned that “I’m sure you have at least some of her tal-“
“No! Nooo no no! I don’t have any of Momma’s talent! Notta bit!” the fox look surprised as he cut her off… the whole group seemed surprised in fact, but he kept going all the same “I didn’t get any of her skills. Momma’s a great writer and storyteller and I’m… I’m not! Really!” he was rambling at this point and couldn’t stop himself if he tried. It was a lingering side effect of a few… comments on his creative writing assignments from back in the day from teachers who knew who Momma was “I could never come up wiff anythin’ wike Knights of the Evolution Stones or Tale of the-“
“Your mother wrote Knights of the Evolution Stones!?”
Petie managed to stop his rant short as he heard at least two of the ladies, he hadn’t been paying enough attention to tell who, shout that question. There was a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach as he realized what he’d blurted out in that emotional rant… leaving him with only one thing to add…
“… oops…”
