Timeless: Spiritual Song
Drawing started in January, finished in April, before I tweaked the official design of the Varanar. Here they still lack the furred tails and wear the outdated outfits, but everything else is correct.
--
The Varanar still have not developed a fully written language and the Turvao in particular, rely strongly on oral traditions to pass on their history. Music and songs are an intrinsic part of their society and the main form of remembering those who have left Varoehinn, the mortal realm. It's through the songs that the voices of those who remain reach their ancestors in the Yondehinn.
Here, Vygo is playing a batutu, a bowed string instrument. It's a large wooden cylinder with a hollow core. A handful of cuts allow the sounds to echo through its body. It has six strings and a deep and powerful sound.
Indrys is playing an antler harp, made from the rack of a large antelope. The strings in the upper part of the harp are played with one's hands, like in a common harp, but the strings in the lower half of the instrument are meant to be played with one's tail. It has the purpose of 'spicing up' the tune instead of being an essential part of the main melody, since Varanar tails are not as dexterous as their hands. Though that doesn't mean there aren't some very skilled harpists who play wonderfully with their tails.

Truly stunning, this whole scene, the background -- even the twins with instruments! You wouldn't normally think of them as musicians, I suppose.
The whole thing is beautiful, and I'm glad to see it again, now, here on FA! :}
Too bad people here couldn't see it sooner, but that's just a perk of being on your Substar.

Well, you deserve all the love in the world ! The twins are also my favorite characters ever !!! I love the way they interact with each other, and the beautiful landscapes are just stunning. And that love they have for each other, so pure, so beautiful, so complete !! It's all simply amazing !
Actually, I am more than ever motivated to live in nature, and enjoying life to the fullest. (and your art has A LOT to do with it, it would cheer me up whenever I felt down and motivate me to become more)
