What the hell, I lost an entire part of that sentence.
I had to choose between the artistic pose, or being correct, and ended up going for the former since it's not a commissions and thus, has a bit more free reign. Though if I can fix it without breaking the composition, let me know.

I figured it was a katana cause the blade was curved, the guard is kinda rounded, and, let's face it, when furrys have swords when are the swords NOT katanas lol? To be fair though, they ARE the coolest swords... other than lightsabers of course.
And you don't need to fix anything from an artistic point of view as the picture is already incredibly well drawn- besides, he could hold a sword like that and still do a number on someone. But if the wolf were to hold the sword properly, the bottom of the grip would be invisible from this angle. The bottom hand is where all the power of a katana swing comes from, so it traditionally covers all of the bottom of the sword and slightly hangs over (the pinky should be just past where the grip ends). This though would make it look like his hands were just grabbing empty space and make the picture slightly less believable... so while a martial arts nut like me might twitch at it, the way you drew it is the better of the two choices and infinitely more awesome

Oh Zambuka, I reflect on this image you were kind enough to draw for me. A friend dragged the story it was based off of, the art just fit it so perfectly. I have friends who complment the image as it paints them a perfect image. One day I must really comission you to take a crack at another story. Sorry for the random I just had to complement it again
