First off, see this one: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/45016101/
Looked at it? Read it? Good
This is a follow-up commission I wanted to get that's in the same theme as that: a commission that explores the long-standing relationship between Shay and Arix; between the curse and the curse's wielder. Like that one this focuses on when Shay was less experienced, coming to terms and learning what he could and couldn't do -- and how Arix co-operates with him and helps him, teaches him and points him in the right direction.
This particular commission has more of a focus on the practical relationship, with Arix attempting to teach Shay to use their combined magic to help attack and defend himself in the wilds. Canonically, Arix is responsible for nearly all of Shay's magic -- Shay himself is naturally a not-particularly-gifted magical individual -- and in all honesty this is a reflection of that: his inexperience with magic; his visible frustration at struggling to wield it; and yet his determination to understand it.
Likewise there's Arix who, throughout, is patient with his learning and mistakes, co-operative, never angry with him. She's content to see him progress at his own pace -- correcting him again and again as he learns.
Whereas the previous comm had them indoors -- reading -- this one has them outdoors, somewhere secluded and rarely-visited: long-left ruins amongst a forest. A harbinger and wielder of cursed magic, the sort of magic Shay has access to isn't magic that other people can understand -- and it's the sort of magic he knows they won't accept if they see him practicing it. Understandably, he feels more comfortable practicing it in private -- where he can't be judged for what he is.
