Don't get me wrong, I like Scizor as a Pokémon, but I've always preferred Scyther myself, if anything because it can at least move faster than molasses. 8l Also, while Steel makes an outstanding body type, it's weaksauce when it comes to actual attacking. I have plenty of other things to take care of Rock and Ice, y'know.

It gets its speed cut in half in favor of a little more on attack and defense. Honestly, I used to think Scyther was a glass cannon, but then I looked at its stats and found out both its defenses are actually pretty solid. Which also makes it more worthy-seeming for me. :V
Just the other day, I had a 49-win streak in the Battle Hall with my Heracross. Then the Frontier Brain challenged me with, guess what? A Scizor. 3 Brick Breaks would've killed it off before it killed me, BUT FOR SOME STUPID REASON, IT HAD COUNTER, USED IT ON ME ON MY SECOND BRICK BREAK, AND FUCK ME I DIED BEFORE I COULD GET THAT ONE LAST HIT OFF

I know, when I took on the tag battle with me and my rival versus Clair and Lance in the Dragon's Den, all of my mons were at Level 55-ish like the others, while Lance's were Level 70 nukes. I only managed to win after like 10-15 retries because the first few turns went splendidly with Lance's Feraligatr flinching Clair's Dragonair, preventing it from using Thunder Wave on it, and it went sorta uphill from there. :V
Nah, I wasn't saying I hate Scizor -- in fact, it's probably actually one of my favorites by now. (Although Scyther will always have a special place in my heart, even when I've grown out of Pokemon. =P)
It's just, the very first time I saw ir, I thought of it as unnecessary. And this was back when I was about 9 years old, roughly 10 years younger than I am now. I was like... "isn't Scyther powerful enough on its own? Why does it need an evolution? Not to mention, it's hard enough to find as is..."
Of course, now I just don't really care about that mumbo jumbo, especially considering all the neat artwork done of both species. :)

Bug/Steel isn't that good of a typing either, though it means only one weakness, but it's one that's really big. One fire move and it's gone. Steel is better for defense than offense. Only two types weak to steel, but it has a lot of resistances and one immunity.
I greatly prefer Scyther over Scizor. Scyther's my second favorite Pokémon, behind Mewtwo, and I do real good with one. I have one on my Platinum team, my Heart Gold team, and my Soul Silver team, permanent team member. Platinum's is 71, Soul Silver's is 54, and Heart Gold's is 49, but will get higher with the rest of the team. Highest there are only 50, my Feraligatr and Ampharos. Haven't gotten all the Kanto badges yet, but I did get Raikou and Entei before beating the league. They all have the same moveset too, which is Wing Attack, X-scissor, Night Slash, and False Swipe, and the same ability, Technician. Actually have two on Soul Silver, and I'll eventually train the other one up to the same level of the first one, then compare them. First one has Quiet, the second one has Adamant with a speed boosting characteristic. It will most likely have more attack and speed than the first one, though it was caught at a higher level, after I got the National dex. I think Platinum's is Docile, and Heart Gold's is Adamant.
Scizor..... can be good and I like it somewhat, but I prefer not to evolve my Scyther. A Scyther with Adamant can do some crazy damage with a Technician boosted Wing Attack. Might put the power above X-scissor even. Then again, X-scissor does crazy damage too, mainly against Grass types, Psychic types, and Dark types. Mine in Heart Gold took out Will's whole team in only a few hits, Karen's Umbreon in a single hit, and Sabrina's Espeon and Mr. Mime in a single hit even though they were faster and a higher level. Would of also gotten out her Alakazam in a single hit too if it didn't have Reflect up, it was faster and got it up, but survived a Psychic to finish it off with another move.
Eh..... yeah. Got carried away there. Anyways, I will never evolve a Scyther as I prefer it to Scizor. Great speed to go with that Attack, and I think it looks better. Much better choice. Besides, does it even need an evolution, one that requires giving it an item and trading it? Or does it even need one at all?

Yeah, I know. My Scythers are pretty much the same, except mine in HG knows Bug Bite instead of X-Scissor, since Technician boosts it to actually make it even MORE powerful than X-Scissor, with the additional benefits of more PP. And a side-effect of stealing berries that won't pop up too often, but isn't too much of a hindrance to have. :U
I dunno, the whole trading thing does make it an awfully complicated process just for something that has the same base stat total, but essentially cuts speed in half to boost attack and defense a little. And a lot of people in the meta-game know that speed is one of the most important stats on a Pokemon. Having the first move can give you a big advantage. Hell, there are moves that have to take advantage of it, like Me First.

Bug Bite? Nice. I like X-scissor, but I might look into Bug Bite maybe at one point. Used the move tutors at the frontier in Soul Silver, to teach my Typhlosion Thunderpunch. He needed another move type. Only had one fire and..... three normal? Now his set is mainly physical, with Flamethrower for his special attack and STAB, but he has an attack raising nature, which is Naughty. Never thought of Bug Bite on a Scyther. Might have to check it out..... if I ever have the BP for it. Heh. Might be fun to use and the added effect of stealing berries if it does pop up is always welcomed. I go for PP over power mostly, more times to use a move. Heh. Might even keep Psybeam on my Espeon and not have her learn Psychic, if I get her up high enough for that. My Vaporeon on Soul Silver has Aurora Beam, which she will keep. Extrasensory is a very good Psychic move. 80 power and 30 PP, but only learned by a few. I like PP over power for several moves, PP and accuracy actually. Accuracy is important. Flamethrower is much better than Fire Blast, and Surf is better than Hydro Pump, for example. Thunderbolt over Thunder too, but Thunder is more usable on a Rain Dance team, and Blizzard on a Hail team.
Yeah, seems like kind of a waste in one way. You loose a good amount of speed for a small boost to attack and defense, as well as getting a major fire weakness, and you have to make sure the other person will actually trade back so you can get your newly evolved Pokémon back, or if you have two DS's, trade between them. I do that using my mom's DS. She doesn't use it anymore so I use it when I want to trade, but it's not really for evolving, just getting a certain Pokémon on a certain game. Yeah, speed is important. I prefer neutral natures some of the time, but aside from Adamant and Modest, for those that specialize in one kind of attack category, neutral mainly for those that are good with both physical and special moves, another good choice is Jolly and Timid. My Ninetales on Soul Silver is Timid, and so is my Heart Gold Noctowl. Suits them, as they use only special moves. Fly for my Noctowl is only used to get around. Hehe. Me First can be a fun move on a Pokémon with high enough speed. Good way to surprise opponents.

Personally, Steel is one of my favorite types, and my Steelix on my Alpha Sapphire game is my heaviest hitter next to my Blaziken.
But it's interesting; when Scyther evolves, its base stat total actually doesn't change, it's where those stats go that do; it loses some speed but gains LOTS of attack power and a significant defense boost, so whether you go for Scyther or Scizor can be boiled down entirely to a matter of taste :). That and of course the tactical choice between a Flying-type or a Steel-type.

god this is so old, it's in my scraps and everything, how the heck do u people get to these submissions
Since then though, Eviolite's come out and Scyther can even be statistically better than Scizor in both defense stats (even though Bug/Flying is still one of the worst combos for not getting hecked up by type advantages)

I was looking up pictures of Scyther; found this on the fourth page. Seems that there aren't actually that many pictures of it on FA XD.
Dealing with type advantages is a battle in and of itself; your opponent will always have an attack that can hurt them. You just need to be able to hurt them right back :). Take Aggron for example; Rock and Steel, quadruple weakness to Fighting and Ground. The trade-off, an immensely high defense and the sturdy ability, and nearly all Fighting and Ground-type attacks are physical attacks, so if he can withstand that first hit, an attack like Metal Burst will take out pretty much anybody.
