Autumn was a peculiar thing on Nox' current world of residence. It had a number of oddities, but the most visible one was the fact that it only lasted one day. One would be quick to dismiss this was some weird calendar convention, but this could not be further from the truth. First-time visitors, like Nox had been before he moved here, usually witnessed this with a micture of fascination and a little gloom of apocalyptic flavour.
A couple of years in, it was just another autumn day for the mirror-fox now, and thus he sat on the terrace of his guildhouse, watching the leaves of trees rapidly turning gold or red, before falling down in masses. One of the disadvantages of a one-day-autumn was the challenge of coping with a sudden drop of temperature. Elbrin had just suffered from heatwave, and if not for the autumn, this day would have been just a continuation of umcomfortably hot weather. As such, Nox had omitted his usual jacket and tie, plus, he had only tasks within the guildhouse today anyway.
"Not feeling cold yet?"
Nox perked his ears and turned to face the racoon, then shook his head. "No i am fine, thank you."
"Alright. Nonetheless, have some tea", Charlie offered, and placed one of the cups he was holding in front of Nox before sitting down. "I mean, it is the one day in the year you happened not to dress like a magipunk mob-enforcer, and then it is becoming cold."
"Hey it is not like a tie and jacket would be warm enough for subzero-temperatures. But i did bring a coat.", Nox explained and took a sip from the tea.
"Ah, that one coat. Magipunk-PI then.", Charlie chuckled.
Nox just twitched his ears upon this commend, but said nothing. His fellow cursebreaker always had colourful ways to describe Nox' usual attire, and that was a new one.
"By the way, i am supposed to remind you, it is your turn this year. Your first time, if i remember correctly?", Charlie enquired.
"Well yes... it is. I mean, i know it is my turn, but, hey, Cel and Nathan are so much better with this." Nox knew that he would not be able to talk his way out of this, but he remained anxious about it. "Elemental Magic is not my strong point."
"A vulpine species genetically engineered to win the favour of the Rain-Goddess..."
"Speculation!", Nox interrupted the racoon.
"A member of a vulpine species, which is the favoured one by the Rain-Goddess..."
"I am not pious!", the mirror-fox protested.
"But you mirror-foxes are all about rain, aren't you? It cannot be that hard to cast a snow-spell into the sky.", Charlie insisted.
"...snow isn't rain!", Nox protested and crossed his arms.
"Look, all the excess thermal energy of the summer does not just dissipate, but instead is converted into an arcane flow in the B- and N-spectrum. Most vegetation on this world had adapted to use this, to accelerate the processed that usually would take weeks in order to prepare for the winter. The beautiful thing about this is that it makes casting elemental magic in the B-spectrum, which happens to include snow and ice, incredibly easy. It is almost like every organism that can just use a little bit of arcana is willing winter to come, which makes on wonder wether the one-day autumn was there first, or wether it is result of this adaption. Point is, you just have to go with the flow. Plus, it is a tradition of this cities arcane institutions to greet the coming winter this way."
Nox did not expect a sudden miniature-lecture about the one-day-autumn, but Charlie explanation was on the spot, as far as he knew. "Fine", he said, then emptied the cup of tea in one go.
"Wait, what?", the racoon wondered, but the mirror-fox had already gotten up. "You want to do it right now?"
"Might as well be the very first today then. By the time the sigil has reached the cloud-layer, it will be evening anyway." Nox replied, raising his right arm towards the sky. Flow or not, it still took him a moment to prepare B-spectrum magic, but then magic circlew drew themselves both above him and on the ground below him. Soon, a trail of sparkles connected both circles, some of them splitting up into tiny snowflakes, slowly dispersing into the air. He was glad now that he had rolled up the sleeves of his shirt, since he was feeling quite warm again. Or rather, he ceased to feel the coming coldness.
For a moment he felt connected to a transcendential ecosystem, that, as was just explained to him, converted the excess heat into energy, which in turn was converted into a winter-summoning spell myriads of organisms contributed to, him included now. He allowed his ethereal self to dissolve in the gentle flow of magic as much as he could without seperating it from himself, a smile forming on his muzzle when he gathered himself enough again. He only needed to let the upper circle go now, allowing it slowly drift upwards towards the overcast sky.
The lower circle dissappeared, at least its visible part. But Nox was still connected, moreso, he still was conduit for the winter-summoning spell now, which would last for the rest of the day.
"...you dissolved, didn't you?", Charlie asked, turning his ears sideways.
"... I... uh... what?", Nox asked back. Admittedly, he had problems to distinguish between his own thoughts and the stream of ambient ephemeral incantations that he helped channel now.
"And your double-ended perceptrons make it twice as hard to focus, right?"
There was something about ethereal dissolution and mirror-fox anatomy on the blurry shores of his memory, but it was more like he was gently sailing past those memories, towards the much more promising prospect of wandering in the snow later.
"Okay... you better take the rest of the day off then.", Charlie sighed, then chuckled. "Come on, let us get inside."
It was not like Nox was completely spaced out, though he had a hard time through the afternoon gathering himself enough to focus on his was home, though he was right that he did not mind the cold anymore in the slightest.
This is a wonderful stream-sketch by
alishka , i happened to get a slot in the new-years-eve stream, which surprised me a lot!As this years winter so far turned out to be more on the rainy side, i went for a wintery spellcast theme, which she rendered into his spectacular piece.
