I understand it as a more psychological issue, when basic things are flawed you don't need an expert to know something is wrong, and proportions is one key part that when wrong even someone who doesn't draw notice something is off, since working on such extremes proportions, everybody's brain will most likely go "head is too small that's not right" rather than "the head is fine, it's the body that is massive"
