Actually, these would be more accurately described as feral horses, since Assateague ponies are descended from domestic horses that have lived wildly on the island for a few hundred years.

, while I attempted to paddle our kayak. It was a beautiful day even if I got a nasty sunburn from it.
We proceeded to land a bit too close to the ponies and they stared at us as the waves smashed our boat against the shore. Took a bit of rowing from both of us to get out, but we made it.
