A few months ago, a controversy erupted over the construction of a gigantic student dormitory in the San Diego campus of the University of California [1] : a billionaire proposed to donate 200 millions dollars (about 15% of the budget) toward construction if his design was followed to the letter. But the plans have numerous defects : the bedrooms are tiny, 95% of them have no windows, 8 students must share a bathroom and kitchen, there are only 2 entrances for 4500 students... [2]
This is the kind of situation where even I, a complete amateur, could do better than that !. So I decided to house the same number of students (4500) within the same footprint (a 120m square). These designs use the Cityspace Micropad, a 40ft shipping container converted into two 16sqm studios with shower and kitchenette [3], as the minimal unit for the buildings. This results in each student having sunlight and basic amenities, but indoor meeting space is sparse.
