This reminds me a bit of the short-shorts written by Hemmingway. I was pretty young when I read them so most of them didn't make sense to me. Maybe I should try reading them again.

This also reminds me of my father's own death. I have only one sibling, an older sister. Our relationship isn't as close, though. I suppose she could be called the strong one. She had dealt with the deaths of her inlaws so she had the experience to deal with our father's affairs.

I like Jack too. Maybe that nice lady cop could drop by for tea on her day off.

This was sort of cathartic for me too. My own father passed away barely a month ago. Jack is based in part on my own brother in his way of dealing with things and general outlook.

Novels are a whole different animal of course, but I'd be very interested in seeing what you could accomplish in 500 pages.

That is very kind of you to say...but I am still a little inexperienced to tackle something like that I think.

I'm working on mine now, progress is slow but steady.

Big tip that might help, if you decide to give it a try: take a small pocket notebook with you wherever you go, and when you have an idea, write it down. When the notebook is full, transfer everything from the notebook to a text file in chronological order, and you'll have a very good outline to write from!

Now that is a very good idea! I will give it a whirl...once I settle on a plot.
