Well, yes and no. Its about a 2 year minimum of schooling before you can take any of your Certification tests. Its hard to find a reputable school, or a school with a really good teacher. Its one of those jobs where it all depends on the skills of the individual. If your a good welder your a good welder, if not then your not. The good ones get jobs, the bad ones usually don't.
Its about slow steady movements of your torch and not getting distracted during your passes. You have to focus and try and make every pass your best. If your thinking about what your gonna be doing 5, 10 minutes from now or what your gonna do next week, your gonna have a bad weld. Other then that, if you get your movement down and smooth you'll do great. A lot of the bigger "red-neck" like guys don't do as well as they think they will because they try and manhandle everything. They have no finesse.
Once I have my own place and some equipment in the next 2 or 3 years, I'm gonna give lessons to people as long as they pay for Fuel and Rod. Which actually isn't that expensive.
