Today I bring you Amy Young from Criminal Case. I doubt anyone would know what that is, as it was just a mere Facebook game, but for me, Criminal Case was more than just a game. It was an obsession. Whenever the conversation of favorite video game comes up, I always have to take a pause and think "Was criminal case my favorite game?"
Criminal Case is a search and find murder mystery game. I think it came out in either late 2012 or 2013, and I got into it close to the beginning of its life. You play as a character of your design, and are on a police squad solving murders. There ended up being eight seasons, and each one was just so well written. Unfortunately, COVID caused the developers to work from home, and they ended cutting the last one short, and ending the series, leaving a hole in my heart. Like I can tell you some cases I was on when big life events happened. Pathetic I know...
Like every Facebook game, there are elements that you have to wait for, this being the analyzation of clues. The body itself took 18 hours, and once they had the same format for each case, I had the system down to a science. A case came out every Thursday. I got up at 3 am, and 18 hours would be 9pm. Then it was a couple of twelve hours ones, from 9 to 9. Then it ended with a 15, which was the last clue to catching the killer.
As I just stated, there were eight seasons. Each one was so unique, introducing new and unique characters and storylines.
Season 1: Grimsborough: You start in the city of Grimsborough, and slowly work your way up. You start in the slums, and end up solving the murders of elites towards the end. There are "districts" in the season, each one containing their own little story, involving the more prominent characters of each district.
Season 2: Pacific Bay: Also a city, but each district was much more unique. You had drug dealers, voodoo, a feud between Russian and Chinese communities, a town recovering from a tornado with a serial killer back after years of silence. Then you have the snowy peaks of White Peaks with creatures from legend, a Hollywood parody, aliens, and more. It was such a good season.
Season 3: World Edition: You join an agency set up to solve cases all over the world. During this season, you uncover a shadow organization, who are pulling the strings from the shadows the entire season.
Season 4: Mysteries of the Past: This one is set in the past. I cannot put into words how cool this season was. It has one of my favorite villains, probably of all time, in it. Prefect example of lawful evil.
Season 5: The Conspiracy: You return to Grimsborough to a force with some new, and some familiar faces. It starts with uncovering a missing supply of medicine from a zoo, to a plot involving a technical genius and superpowers. Then it gets weird.
Season 6: Travel in Time: Arguably the weakest season in my opinion. You start off solving the murder of Caesar, which happens before it actually happened, and have to fix the time stream. However, you are sabotaged and the timeline distorted. You have to fix the timeline to get back to the future you came from.
Season 7: Supernatural Investigations: You join a group of well, supernatural investigators, and solve crimes staring all sorts of mythical creatures, and uncover a plot that demons plan of taking over the world and you have to stop them.
Season 8: City of Romance: We join with yet another team, this time in Paris. The plot is shorter here, due to COVID, but revolves around our partner's missing brother, and the local gang.
Then comes Amy Young. First introduced in Pacific Bay, I loved her character. She was the fresh faced rookie teamed up with me and Frank, her senior officer, who is your stereotypical movie detective, with the drinking habits, and not understanding technology. As I said before, each season is comprised in districts, and in Pacific Bay, each one kind of focused on each member of the force.
SPOILERS FOR PACIFIC BAY
Amy's "arc" was so hard to watch. She's this cute and bubbly person most of the time, but Murphy's Law hit her hard. We start with running into her ex boyfriend who she still clearly has feeling for. However, during the investigation of a plane crash and a murdered/cannibalized pilot, we find her boyfriend Bobby guilty of the crime. Next, her childhood bestfriend is found dead. She was murdered during the creation of a documentary of the "The Night Walker" a local legend supposedly responsible for the disappearances of woman over the years. We meet her mom, who is frankly, an asshole mom. and her brother. Her brother being in a wheelchair after being paralyzed on the force years earlier. Not only does the Night Walker turn out to be real, but it turns out to be her brother, who has gained the ability to walk after years of practice.
Understandably, Amy gets a bout of depression during all this, but we manage to cheer her up and take down her brother. But unfortunately, she gets a little bit more towards the end of the season. An evil AI has released five killers from the season, and one had killed Frank (that death hurt a lot) and of course it was Bobby. He eliminated Frank thinking he was the reason he couldn't be with Amy anymore. He then turned the gun on the player, forcing Amy to shoot him in the heart.
I get attached to fictional characters very easily, and I really wanted to give her a big hug after the season was over. Hug She does return in Travel in Time, but she's older and more mature, and there really isn't any growth there. It more focused on the new characters, so I live to remember Amy as the fresh new rookie on the force.
Of course, in game, I wanted to giver her a big ol'e hug, but here, I wanted to add to the despair. She went though all that, only to end up turning into an elephant. She looks so defeated.
