A quiet chime was heard in the night and reflected from the walls of houses. He disturbed something in the very corner of consciousness, but was too quiet for anyone to focus on him.
Sleepers were the worst. They could not concentrate in any way on the source of the sound, and in the meantime it slowly paralyzed them, causing confusion in their thoughts, and sometimes sleep paralysis.
It was the Hounds. They came from nowhere, gathered in flocks and sang, sang... The Hounds fed on thoughts. That informational noise that accumulates in the mind during the day, and which we scroll through in the head before going to bed. The singing of the Hounds attracted thought currents from all over the city, but their withdrawal did not go unnoticed. Because of the holes in the memories, even if they were quite insignificant, thoughts were confused and rushing about, and people lost control of themselves. For a moment they seemed to be in a waking dream, intoxicated, confused and weakened. It was possible to bring thoughts in order only in the morning, when the singing of the Hounds subsided.
Until one day Randy came out to meet the Hounds.
He stood a stone's throw from the whole flock, and his mind was not clouded for a second. Randy controlled every thought that swirled through his mind and didn't let outside influences harm him in any way.
The singing of the flock first subsided, and then completely interrupted, clinking loudly for the last time.
Now the flock has a leader.
