Some more time spent on private pictures. I always love when ships have just this whole mess of lines going on. it must've been like some old-timey server room to maintain them.

Always wonderful to see more canon art of your sona, the sunset is pleasant and gives a sense of the vastness of the horizion while at sea but also muted enough not to distract viewers from the focus of the piece. Expert composition as always. Have you ever given any thought to what sort of crew he might have?
where were you when I was writing 'The Dread Pirate Tabor'?
it's only a rope if it's not being used for anything... as soon as it is incorporated into the rigging, it has an exact name reflective of its use.
I had so much fun writing that particular novel, and I learned so much about sailing...

The naming of the rigging is actually pretty logical, once you know the names of the masts and sails. Standing rigging is called stays or shrouds, while running rigging, that control the sails, are called sheets. A three masted ship of the line can have miles of cordage, HMS Victory had over twenty five miles, including the large cable.
Love the picture.
Love the picture.
I must chime in with the rest here, this is such a wonderful piece.
Rigging and lines contrasted against the sunset really does compose nicely. With your character center stage? This is brilliant.
There's some pretty fascinating info when it comes to rigging. Standing and running, fore and aft stays, shrouds, most of it all was dedicated to keeping the mast upright and stiff.
What you've got here is the bowsprit, and it has a slew of lines all mostly called stays, a few gales, several guys and even a single rope! :D

You can tell when someone has a fascination with some object. How? The level of unnecessary detail in its finer details when someone draws or paints it. You didn't need to draw all the sail pullies so nice. But you did anyway. :D
Nomax def loves the great age of exploration and all the cool sail ships that entails yes? :P

That's not how you steer! Silly puppy.
Early utility installations were also a spiderweb of chaos, not unlike some of the server rooms I've seen. Except more deadly:
