– Mom, I'm going for a walk in the woods! – A blond shadow with a ponytail and a backpack flashed through the door.
– Be careful! – she heard in reply.
The girl deftly jumped on her bicycle and raced forward along the country road. Today was a beautiful summer day. It was a pity it was the last day of summer vacation, but she wasn't discouraged. Tomorrow was the least of her worries.
She deftly rolled down the road, greeting everyone she met and they smiled back at her. Many people here knew her because of her mischievous-good nature. You could say she was a local favorite.
After leaving the village, the girl soon turned off the road into a clearing, and was already driving among the rows of trees. This forest was in some ways unique: it had been practically wiped off the face of the Earth in, but people came to their senses and began to quickly restore it and more. The forest itself was coniferous, but for some reason, several hectares of deciduous trees of all stripes were planted here first, with conifers already on the outside. And as a result, if you look from above, there was such a big circle of slender deciduous trees, closed by a ring of conifers, inside of which there was a blot of the same conifers.
It was exactly to this blot that the girl was headed. It wasn't as far from the village as it might have seemed, especially if riding a bicycle. But there wasn't much riding inside the Old Forest, so the girl left her bike and briskly walked into the thicket.
She remembered the route well, and was nimble through branches and tall ferns. Not a few minutes later, the girl came to a small clearing. In its center was a small lake, from which flowed a small stream. It was overgrown with reeds and didn't look very pretty, but the girl didn't care.
– Okay! – The girl quickly took off her backpack.
From the backpack she took out shorts, a sleeveless jacket and swimming goggles, and began to undress to the naked. She was not afraid anyone would see her, since no one was there but her. Having changed her clothes, she hid her backpack behind the nearest tree and carefully entered the water.
The bottom of the lake was muddy, so that every step raised a murk, but in the reeds was less mud. It was deep in the places where reeds were growing, the water reached the girl's chest, but she kept walking. So she reached the open area where a tube was sticking out of the water... a tube? And not just sticking out, but supported on a bottle taped to it so it wouldn't fall down. Something green could be discerned under the tube.
The girl carefully lowered herself under the water. In front of her stood the tent among the reeds. This did not surprise her at all, since she had set up the tent here herself. It was her secret place, which she had made herself. After going around the tent a little and finding the entrance, the girl dived out to get breath, went back under the water and opened the entrance.
Inside the tent were some large rocks to keep it from floating, some toy rings, and laminated large playing cards. Here, from the ceiling of the tent, protruded the other end of a tube, to which was attached a snorkel with a pair of valves on it. The girl swam inside, zipped the entrance behind her, and took hold of the snorkel. With a practiced motion, she first opened one valve to blow water out of the snorkel until bubbles appeared, and then opened the second valve to begin breathing. And, all in all, the basic ritual was complete.
"I wonder what will become of this tent in the winter?" – the girl wondered, putting a stone between her legs for weight. – "There's bound to be an insane amount of mud in here, that's for sure"
She took the band off her hair and spread it out to the side. There was no current in the tent, and her hair slowly fell down. The light paddles of her hands made her hair wave and rise upward. She really enjoyed watching it. She fastened the band on her finger like a ring.
"I wish people would figure out how to make gills" – she exhaled through her nose as she looked up at the ceiling. – "I'd go straight off to find a good lake for the house..."
The water did get deep into her nose, causing the girl to squeeze her eyes shut with discomfort.
"And get the nose fixed..." – this time she deliberately tilted her head back, letting the water penetrate further to get her nose used to it.
After sitting like that for a while, she reached for the rings and began to juggle them. The rings, while spinning, hung in one place, and, losing momentum, quickly fell down. The girl tried in every way to make all her rings spin in the water, but so far she had failed: she probably had too many rings.
Suddenly she hesitated, stilling and letting the rings fall:
"I'm all alone here... and the water seems to be warm..."
For a second she hesitated, crossing her fingers, and then she made up her mind. Closing the valve, the girl put the snorkel down and took off her sleeveless shirt and then her shorts. Her body immediately floated up to the ceiling and she had to somersault to grab onto a rock. Her clothes slowly fell down beside her.
"It feels like I'm still dressed" – the girl ran her hand over her body. She liked that feeling.
She decided not to sit back down, and with one hand she helped herself to take the snorkel for breath. She hung between the floor and the ceiling, getting used to the new sensation. She wanted to let go of the stone, to let herself dangle just so, but she was afraid the snorkel might bend too much. Then an interesting thought occurred to her: what if she breathed in a little, or exhaled altogether?
At first she tried breathing a little at a time, but that had to be controlled, which she didn't want to do, so she just exhaled. Her body immediately slumped and the girl hung with the tube in her mouth. Soon she shuddered lightly and began to breathe again.
"I'd rather put a rock on my chest," – she agreed with herself.
Holding her breath, the girl began to fantasize. She imagined that she was in a closed box with no way out, and swam up and down to one corner to the other "looking for" an exit. She found this activity amusing. Then she took a rock on her chest and lay down on the floor. There was mud under the tent, which made the girl sink slightly into the floor, which was even nice. She stretched her arms up, as if trying to reach for something. Then she remembered her clothes, and began to play with them. Of course, from time to time, she swam up to the tube to breathe.
"Man, why can't I stay here?" – The girl felt herself begin to tremble with her whole body. – "Why aren't people adapted to live in water? It's not fair!"
She sadly took one last breath, and, taking her clothes in her hands, swam toward the exit. For a second she thought how interesting it would be if the tent's exit zipper had gone dead, and she would have stayed here. Really, there was nothing good to be had here, which she was well aware of. The zipper opened without a problem and the girl swam out. After closing the tent behind her, she took her time to swim out into the reeds.
She imagined herself as a mermaid, swimming in the depths of the sea in search of treasure. Slowly swimming in the reeds, she looked back and forth, generally just playing. Suddenly she found herself near the edge of the reeds.
"Wow..." – it surprised her how fast she could swim to the edge without even trying. She looked up. – "It must be deep here..."
She floated up, exhaling loudly, kicking the water out of her nose. Her feet didn't reach the bottom. She threw her hands up, diving under the water, and the water reached her right up to her wrists before she touched the bottom.
– blVeblry bldeeblp, – the girl said suddenly to herself. Even though it surprised her, she continued with a smile. – blYes. blVeblry bldeeblp! – she came up and went back under the water. – Iblf bltheblre blweblre meblrmablids blheblre, Ibl blwoublld blhablve mabldebl blfrieblndsbl wiblth bltheblm!
She felt very funny at the sound of her voice under the water. But as much as she wanted to stay here longer, she felt herself starting to freeze.
"I can just lie on my back, though!" – she suddenly thought as she prepared to swim back. - "It's warmer up top"
So she did, surfacing and spreading her arms and legs out to the sides. The water did get warmer, plus the sun was warming. It was nice. You just have to breathe straight so you don't accidentally go under.
"Humans are made of 80% water" – she thought, – "and yet we can't live in it, nor breathe in it. Except to drink..."
She carefully removed her glasses from her head and exhaled deeply. Opening her eyes, she watched as blurred air bubbles ran briskly toward the surface, followed by her hair. The feeling of complete freedom was drowned out only by the clothes that the girl clutched in her fist. She put her hand out in front of her and let the clothes float after the air. It was an interesting scene.
The girl was able to stay on the bottom for a few seconds before she came up. As she put her clothes back on and returned to shore, she realized how cold she was.
"I love it here!" – she pondered, wiping herself with a towel. – "Nice woods all around. Not a single living soul. The lake, warmed by the sun. One beauty! If the tent can survive the winter, I'll definitely come back here... hah! as if I wouldn't do that anyway"
