There was a bit of a kerfuffle when they found two random human kids hiding in their kitchen, full of pranks as always. One of 'em locked Max in the freezer while the other bonked Devin over the head. Shocking and unacceptable behavior on the part of the children, but their parents are really to blame.
This is a dramatic representation of the events in the kitchen, though it's clear that the filmmaker is biased in favor of the children:

They are super cute here, and there's a bit of significance behind this too! Right about the time that I was returning to the fandom, I caught a Vallhund stream of Devin, who was just getting a redesign. Max drew elements from Devin's design, so in a way Max is buddying up with his role model here.
