Those "swirly things" are called naruto. Yes thats where the anime charecter got his name from. I was hoping to see in the recipe how to make these, as they just arent available in most stores in the US. Unless you happen to be lucky enough to lve in a major city with a huge Asian population, like NYC, or SF. Then you may be lucky enough to have one of the big Asian chain stores like Lotte. No such luck in my state. So, where did you get yours? Or can you or anyone else reading this later share a recipe on how to make them from scratch (preferred)?
Thanks.
And it does look good.
And yes I love the udon (wide) noodles too. Dont think id try buckwheat soba, but thats good in other dishes. I can at least make my own noodles, and dry uncooked is easy to mail order, unlke the naruto.

As for it being too fishy, usually you only get a few in a bowl when getting carryout in Japan (remember, less is more?). Usually, there are combinations of other thihgs along with it. Keep in mind that Japan, is primarilly a fish eating country. Oh, big advice, don't eat the hot dogs at the basball games there. They arent made with meat. They used to be called whale dogs by visiting gaijin.
