I remember watching a video about doing variations on monsters based on the environment they lived in. I think it mostly focused on various goblin types, but this reminds me of this. I do like the idea of exploring how certain environments - or even catastrophes - can shape the lives, habits, and general abilities of your basic monster. Though if you wanna use them as a GM, that's gonna require a lot more work on your part.
Still, pretty cool to see this, though it makes me sad for the poor kobold. Hope the lair didn't get infected too. A disease can wipe out entire tribes if they're isolated enough and can't get help.

Hang on. Should be able to find him if I look up his Kobold Kanun video. Pretty sure it was the same guy.
Ah, found it! Here ya go: https://youtu.be/nfQx-BhG1q0
(Also, have a fun Critical Role animatic he did of the brave little kobold known as Spurt: https://youtu.be/ipGCZ8lzfGE )
I think he also has one on kobolds, as this is a series he did on various D&D monsters and how you could spice them up a bit. And there was another he did on the idea of magical pollution, and what that might look like. Lots of Wizards experimenting in the middle of nowhere tend to dump their failures at the edge of their property, or let loose the living ones into the wild. Irresponsible acts that tend to make the surrounding environment a lot more dangerous, or at least very toxic and unhealthy.
Heh. If I had the money, I could commission you to draw up some poor kobolds that have been subjected to horrible experiments and left to fend for each other when the Wizard didn't get the results he wanted. Biomancy can be a cruel science to practice upon the unwilling.
