I imagine the bandana mask might have somewhat obscured the fox's vision resulting in him mistaking a Zaw-Afikh for a Toyol. At least with Tial's shirt already having been soaked that didn't result in one getting destroyed by laser blast and the fox was able to safely catch them.
When Tial wakes up though I imagine the fox will be on the receiving end of a harsh glare and that there will be a lecture.

I don't think they actually get bashed about, they'd have to be real for that to happen-- well, they're not real in this setting, at least.
[though how much of the setting holds true in this comic is ambiguous, since foxes also don't exist on-world]
Pretty sure Fox just used that as an excuse to have to rescue and cuddle Tial, which was a very risky move that could've resulted in their searing death :/ I'm not sure I understand the trajectory of the launch, if the ray hit horizontally... and sent them flying upwards ?- ??
