I use a similar technique, but I don't do line. Only the sketch as a reference point. And I use "layering". to give the wool more volume.

I leave it transparent on top. I use shadows or tints to separate the "parts" of the character (for example, here the muzzle overlaps the neck, I separate it with shadows from below and light from above) and then turn it off completely. sometimes I turn it back on when I need to make sure I am not going beyond the limits of the intended sketch.
