I think the angle is that he's coming from a place of shame. He's not happy or proud of what was done and regrets it. He's showing it outwardly by denigrating himself to someone he cares about to push them away. From my point of view, and it's pretty clear at least to me - is that this subject is VERY difficult for him - considering if you've read the comic this is referring too that the whole relationship was extremely taxing on him and brining it up is also incredibly difficult for him.
He doesn't see any of what happened as admirable, and it's probably his biggest regret.
