In an alternate universe, a certain squirrel is instead born a timber wolf, led along the same path as an orphan of war, but will lead to a different yet recognizable outcome. How will this Katauni differ from his smaller, cuter counterpart? There's only one way to find out...

Katauni Sha'rae was born into the heart of a realm on fire. As the War of the Wildfires raged on and on, it was only inevitable that it would reach his homeland of Airona. The war would swallow his hometown whole and claim his parents, leaving him an orphan at only 10 years old who would have to fend for himself in the spiralling world around him. Luckily, with his peoples distaste of the holy empire that had torn their rule away from them and split their one proud kingdom in two, they were quick to find a way to survive against the Lonians they'd been warring for in the name of Bascendanta. Many had hoped, vainly, that this would be the end of the regions troubles, but ironically their political tactness to save their lands would bring Airona, and her sister kingdom Andosia, into a new era of uncertainty and conflict.
Once known as Aindarosia, the Great Lupine Kingdom, the two sister lands had ruled over all of the Heartlands after a stunning victory against Hecaria, the first of the Mammalian Empires. The hubris born from this victory would lay them low only a century later, however, when they lost a pointless war with Lon, paving the way for the Warrior Queen Baianta Marei to sweep down from the north and claim all territory from Adryvahl to the Ruscan Coast as her domain, forging Holy Bascendanta in the process. To assure the wolves would not rise up against the Heartlands again, she divided their realm down the River Maria, into Airona and Andosia. Like this they would stay for centuries, until the War of the Wildfires finally shattered Bascendanta, and gave the two kingdoms their opportunity for indepedence, and unity.
Unity. It was a powerful and hopeful word, but hundreds of years of division had changed Airona and Andosia, and when the conflict finally ended and the two attempt to convene for talks of unification, things fell apart fast. To simplify what was inheretely a complex issue, Airona wished to rule the new Aindarosia as a Republic, a house of lords under a High Minister. Andosia, however, intended for the unified kingdom to be a Constitutional Monarchy, under their young and impressive new King, Hayden the First. Luckily, the two sides found themselves distracted in rebuilding their torn territory after the war, re-establishing law and order, but this divide has festered, driving by both a desperate desire to be whole again, and a rising distrust of the other.
This would be the world Katauni grew up in, an Aironian boy out on his own, living along the banks of the Maria. From a young age the wolf would learn that charisma and observation were the keys to surviving while keeping out of a jail cell, and when those failed an escape plan and agility were his best friend. When he couldn't talk his way into some honest work for honest money, stealing what he needed was always an option. That said, with just as many people as him struggling to make ends meet, he could never bring himself to take from those who couldn't afford their coin purses to be a few coins lighter. Luckily for him, this outlook would actually save him from a cell on a couple of occassions, with many guardships in various provinces tired of their local lords and barons hoarding money from their people, and would simply let Katauni go.
His early life would heavily shape the timber wolfs outlook on his world. In this post-war age, many of the rich men and women in authority were doing everything they could to increase their own power and wealth at the expense of their struggling, divided provinces, while groups of bandits, often made up of the countless Wartime soldiers left without work or homes, took what was left. Kata found himself fueled with a rebellious desire to do what he could to right this wrong, and make his own living in the process of doing so. Unfortunately, he was just one young wolf with no proper training and very basic thievery skills. He couldn't hope to do anything on his own, but luck would find it's way to him, in the shape of a lucky run-in with a influential member of the very Guild he needed to achieve his newfound goals: The Brotherhood of the Banquet.
The name was ancient, as it's true origin was supposed lost to time, but as the wolves mentor would tell him simply: "We can't just call ourselves the THIEVES Guild, now can we?" In reality, the Guild was more than just a hub for the thieves and rogues of Iyr, it was an old and highly sophisticated faction with extreme power and authority, whose job it was to control and fund illicit activity across the realm. There were strict rules in place, to keep the Guild chivalrous, honorable, and just romantic enough for the public to support its existence, and to Katauni it was a dream come true. His aptitude was quickly discovered, and for the next 5 years he would train hard, aging into a tall, well-muscled, handsome young man in the process. Once he'd achieved the accolades needed to be promoted to the rank of Master Rogue, he finally got his opportunity to approach the Guilds "Willow Table" and request funding and support for his grand scheme.
The idea was simple but elegant: A band of skilled and diverse men who would could quickly and easily move camp when needed, hunting down provinces in dire straits and plotting grand heists against the nobles, royalty, and merchantry, hitting hard and escaping fast. The people would benefit directly from their work, gaining half the wealth obtained, the Willow Table would recieve a nice, fat commission from every completed job, and the group would gain a considerable amount of wealth of their own in the process. Not only that, but a large group like theirs could take smaller jobs and hit spare the moment opportunities at will, only adding to the potentional revenue and good PR the Guild desired. To the Table, it was a Win-Win-Win, and they quickly agreed to fund Katauni and his team-to-be.
Thus the Sha'rae Band was born, led by a skilled and determined timber wolf and made up of some of the best talents the guild could spare. Together, the group of 12 would become a notoriously effective threat to the coffers of anyone with more than they needed, and a proper headache to anyone attempting to apprehend them. After all, when you pay your guards coppers a day, they are likely more inclined to take freely offered gold pieces from the group of warm-hearted outlaws who were technically making their job easier while also snubbing it to their boss.
One can only wonder where they will suddenly appear next, and what unlucky barons castle or merchants estate will be hit next. Perhaps with a touch of luck, one might spot the wolf himself in a tavern, or about the alleyways at night. Who knows, maybe he will take a shine to you and invite you back to camp, where the fun can REALLY begin...~
