Whump is a term that started with the Stargate SG1 fan community when a lot of them realized that they have an attraction to just how much the characters got the ever-loving crap kicked out of themselves. Its since leaked into almost every fandom you can imagine. sometimes it's very light with stuff like sickness, sometimes it's way more intense like straight-up death, but generally any form of hurt/comfort whether in the canon or in fanworks (fics (fanfiction), art, whatever) counts.
It does sound like a somewhat niche interest. Outright sadism I kinda understand, or the desire to see characters go through intense struggles or loss and still persevere (and I get rather annoyed when they breeze through them with little effort). It's the comfort angle that's leaving me a bit confused. I don't think I've heard of it, and I'm not sure I get the appeal. But then I don't really walk in fanfiction circles much anyhow, so that's probably why I'm new to it. My sister might know this term.
Heck, I'm gonna go mess with her at some point using this now. XD Ask her if she's read any good whump fics lately and see how she reacts. And maybe she can explain it to me.

personally, I'm more in it for the hurt part. to call it an interest is putting it mildly lol
There's actually a lot of discussion in the community about why people like it too. Seems a lot of people get comfort out of seeing their favourites being cared for when they are vulnerable. Some people connect with the caregiver, wanting to heal the world. Some connect with the victim, living out their desire to be cared for through them. Some of us are just raging perverts who find that people are beautiful when covered in blood <_<

Well, there is the Victorious Warrior thing, and they tend to be covered in blood. =P Still makes others wanna drop trow and breed with them though.
Me, I might find it better with fake blood and fake death. I'm not sure why. I'm weird. Even online, I guess being too serious or real triggers something in my head, and I act like it's real. But if it's just pretend harm, I'm fine even with being a "victim" or "loser". I think. Not sure I'll understand why, but it's just a real turn-on. Kinda come to accept it.
