just so we're all on the same page.
there's a lot I could say here about how demoralizing it is to have your work compared to a more popular thing in general, and how I understand that it's kind of an inevitable comparison (albeit on the shallowest possible level), and that I don't even think people are doing this maliciously most of the time-
but I super do not appreciate it and y'all are gonna make me spontaneously contract rabies so it's zero tolerance in 2022! my blocklist on FA is extremely small and I would love to keep it that way, but there's only so much I can do to preserve my sanity. I'm tired of disabling comments completely, that's a different kind of depressing in its own right. I'm just gonna link this image in the description going forward and kindly ask you not to be a clown.

Sadly, that is the case for almost everything.
Your character uses brazes? "oh no, inspired in forrest gump" like somehow that movie invented these devices.
Your character has a toothpick in his mouth? Must an idea taken from Clint Eastwood!

I don't like that either. It's the sort of thing that seems like a pointless and irsksome comparison that almost feels like a dig that something was copied, and can even feel like a belittlement of the love and effort that went into something. I don't know if we're so saturated by overused references that people expect them, if people just get excited by any reference as it makes them feel knowledgeable and relatable, or if they think they are giving a compliment by comparing to something popular. But I genuinely don't get it or like it in most cases (to be honest, I find references are often one of the weakest forms of humour anyway). But I am also sure that most people either mean well or aren't thinking. I'd probably just shake my head and move on. Blocking sounds a bit harsh, but it's not wholly unreasonable either. I don't think people get how annoying it can be to hear the same false comparisons over and over (and the references reflecting playground taunts doesn't exactly help to make it any more endearing).
I don't like blocking people unless they're being outright creepy or hostile, and ideally it's something I won't have to do at all moving forward with a fair warning \o/ But the last time I got a rash of comments like this in 2012, it depressed me so much I almost stopped drawing him completely. For a while there I lost a part of myself and I am never going to let that happen again.
